Bouscaut rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2022

Château Bouscaut, a classified growth with a dynamic evolution

Château Bouscaut, owned by the Lucien Lurton family for 43 years, is managed by Sophie Lurton and her husband Laurent Cogombles as well as her son Armand Cogombles. Here the wines reflect a great terroir of clay on limestone. Cru Classé de Graves for both red and white, Bouscaut is not a standard.

Château Bouscaut has frequently evolved in its history, its wines and its packaging, following the path of its various owners. When the family first saw the XIXth Century label worn by Bouscaut wines, it became clear for them that it should never have evolved. They took the decision to change, once more, the Bouscaut label. But, this time, as a move back to an ancient label, to a timeless look, starting from the 2022 vintage.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage of Château Bouscaut possesses a unique gel-like texture, offering a clarity more refined than honey yet richer than typical white wines. The high proportion of Sémillon gracefully weathered the vintage’s heat, achieving harmonious balance through the gentle bitterness of grapefruit peel and a characteristic saline nuance, even with modest acidity. The slight reductive notes evident during En Primeurs have now fully opened up, allowing the ripe aromas of guava and bergamot to shine with greater prominence.

Beautifully rich but not overblown, damson fruit on the nose, well judged smoked oak, thoroughly enjoyable, tannic grip in evidence, a little tight on the finish but in a way that suggests this has long ageing potential. A less exuberant Bouscaut than in some vintages, surprising for 2022, enjoyable. In organic conversion.

The second year of organic conversion marks a new start in Bordeaux's classic estate. Evoking aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and oak, the 2022 Bouscaut is medium to full-bodied, round and dense on the palate with chewy tannins and a slightly dry finish attributed to an oaky, toasty aftertaste and characteristic Cabernet grip. Overall, it represents a commendable effort.

The 2022 Château Bouscaut is brilliant stuff, with a more modern yet balanced, impressive style. Cassis, smoky oak, scorched earth, and graphite notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a killer Grave that will benefit from 4-5 years in the cellar and have two decades of overall longevity. The 2022 is 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Malbec.

2026-2036 92/100

The 2022 Bouscaut offers red and black fruit, though it may not be as complex as its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and moderate depth, but the finish feels a little undernourished given the growing season.

A juicy and expressive Pessac-Leognan with minerals, fresh berries, dark cherries, subtle spices and cocoa powder on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, crunchy fruit and tannins. Quite long, balanced and precise in the finish. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Bouscaut is soft, open-knit and fruit-forward. Lovely floral and savory overtones add nuance as this starts to blossom with a bit of air. This tasty Pessac-Léognan is very nicely done.

Juicy and vibrant, a real strawberry and raspberry tang to the palate with grippy, chalky, soft liquorice, chocolate and spiced tannins. Smooth and enjoyable, nicely presented with such ease of drinking - you don't feel they have overdone things at all. A lovely effort with succulence, grip, salty minerality, clearly ripe fruit but still with an appealing structure and tension. Great stuff.

Although the extraction is slightly noticeable, Château Bouscaut still attains a good balance with its velvety texture. Aromas of water chestnut, mulberry, and black plum harmonize with toasted notes of hazelnut and roasted pumpkin seeds, conjuring a sense of mature elegance. Presently a bit reserved, this wine will reveal a more cohesive profile after 5-7 years of cellaring, considering its remarkable concentration.

The team at Bouscaut has done a great job of paring things back, and bringing a sense of sculpted freshness to both the red and white wines over recent vintages. A real challenge in 2022, particularly in the white wines, and this is certainly intense and creamy, but it is also full of joyful white flower and citrus zest, giving contrast to the ripe stone fruits.

Arômes intenses et bien mûrs de fruits noirs, notes résineuses et de fumée, bon volume en bouche, grand fruit, tannins francs et denses et vivacité finale. Beaucoup d’énergie. Le cru en est en progrès.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Bouscaut Rouge rocks up with ready-to-go notes of black cherry compote, warm cassis, and raspberry preserves, leading to wafts of fallen leaves and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and impressive tension, finishing with good length and purity.

The 2022 Bouscaut rouge, a blend of 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Malbec, offers up aromas of cassis, licorice, graphite and dark berries. It is concentrated and rich with a medium to full-bodied palate and a firm, typically Cabernet grip in the finish. This a great effort for this 55-hectare estate that's entering its second year of conversion to organic farming.
