Borgogno – Barolo Liste Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2020

Borgogno, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:

“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.

Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.

Liste is a vineyard of 6.75 hectares with a south to south-eastern exposure and an altitude ranging from 270 to 330 meters. Its soil is composed of calcareous marl, clay and sand and it has a microclimate characteristic of this most ancient part of the Langa. It produces a Barolo full of harmony and body, complexity and a vibrant tannin. A deep, tumultuous and vivid wine, it is the soul of Borgogno.

The 2020 vintage:

Winter 2020 began with mild weather, gentle temperatures, and little rainfall. The spring was relatively dry and warm, promoting uniform vegetative growth from late February to mid-March, followed by a similarly mild April. These conditions initially suggested an early vintage, but May, unstable and rainy until late June, slowed growth while providing a crucial water reserve for the summer. The season that followed was favorable, with no hail or extreme weather, allowing the vines to avoid water stress. In September, grape ripening resumed rapidly, and the day-to-night temperature variation at the end of September and early October ensured grapes with optimal ripeness and balanced acidity, resulting in an outstanding vintage.

Tasting notes:

Intense ruby red with violet highlights. This Barolo recalls hints of red fruit such as cherries, plums and spices, such as pepper and liquorice, and notes of incense. On the palate, an astringent tannin combined with a marked acidity reveal great aging potential and great personality.

Smooth tannins, melted against bitter marmalade and blood orange, ripe cherry, red liquorice, dried rosemary, tobacco leaf, just love this. All aged in old wooden casks, Andrea Farinetti owner, Simone Bosari winemaker, 6.75ha. This Riserva is only released through the Place. Certified organic since 2019 vintage.

Very different but similarly made, this is very relaxed, broad, ample in frame and hyper-crystalline in texture. It’s less floral, or at least different in its florality, with bracken and dried petals from a long-cherished rose. Ketchup and a hint of balsamic. Sandalwood. In the mouth this is broad and really mouth-filling. It’s also lithe and limpid with impressive viscosity. A fabulous wine once again with lovely grippy tannins framing quite a floated finish. Substantial, though perhaps a little more elegant than the Annunziata. These Borgogno sngle-vineyards Riservas are just exceptional!

Surrounded by forest, Liste is the coolest of Borgogno’s three Riserva sites and also boasts the oldest plantings – some dating back to 1946. In the glass, this translates as the most vertical, tense and introspective. Earthy and mineral rather than floral or fruity, it recalls tobacco, ginseng and ginger to start. A core of wild berries is nuanced by brushwood and bark; a visceral autumnal essence. Acidity is crisp and cooling, and the wine is well measured in density and substance. The tannins are savoury and irony. Rewards should become more apparent with time.

This red is plump and dense, its raspberry, currant and cherry flavors shaded by rose, menthol and iron notes. Dense and leans to the beefy side, with a crisp finish, where dusty tannins linger. Best from 2028 through 2045. 500 cases made, 200 cases imported.

The strawberry and hazelnut aromas are very clear here. Medium body with very fine tannins that are integrated and succulent. Juicy and polished. Lovely refinement to this. Spicy finish to the poised and subtle fruit. Drink after 2028.
