Borgogno - Barolo Annunziata Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2020
Borgogno, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:
“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.
Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.
A vineyard has joined the family: Annunziata. This renowned cru is located in the heart of the hills of La Morra, on compact, clay-dominant soil with excellent water retention. Here, the 0.9-hectare vineyard is cultivated like a secret garden.
The 2020 vintage:
Winter 2020 started with mild weather and little rain, leading to uniform vegetative growth from late February to mid-March. April remained mild and dry, suggesting an early vintage, but May brought instability and frequent rain until late June, slowing vine growth while creating a valuable water reserve for summer. The season then remained favorable, without hail or extreme weather, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. In September and early October, a strong day-night temperature range supported grapes with excellent ripeness and balanced acidity, resulting in a great vintage.
After harvesting the Annunziata vineyard, known for its clay-rich soil and good water retention, the grapes are destemmed, pressed, and fermented in concrete tanks at 22–28?°C for about two weeks. After maceration and partial fermentation, the wine is racked and fermentation is completed in concrete.
Tasting notes:
Ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose hints of fresh red fruit, such as raspberries and cherries, together with light hints of spices, such as liquorice and cinnamon. On the palate a pleasant acidity and fragrance that gives the typical freshness of Barolo Annunziata. Verticality and minerality. An elegant wine accompanied by fine tannins.
