Berliquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2018

Note from Nicolas Audebert :

"The 2018 already bears the stamp of a vintage with two faces because the weather over the year went from one extreme to another. For us at Berliquet, it has all the excitement of the new adventure, the marathon project, one that we truly believe in, despite the fact that we already know that there will be ups and downs along the way!

When we acquired the property in 2017, our team made it a point of honour to hone its knowledge of this exceptional site. Because a wine is made in the vineyards, gaining command of the vineyards and its various different plots and getting to know the plant material were our immediate priorities. Very soon, we had come to the conclusion that, with a very careful management of the vines, Berliquet’s extraordinary terroir (which differs slightly from that of Canon with its stronger clay imprint) was a solid basis on which to build a unique and distinctive wine that was just asking to be revealed.

Thus, over the past year and a half, the wine growers have been ready to get down to the precision work in the 10 hectares of this outstanding terroir. All the soils have been ploughed, by horse on the steeper plots, and the height of the trellising reviewed. The main objective, particularly for this first vintage, was to identify each grape variety individually, vine stock by vine stock, in each of the vineyard plots, because perfect maturity, especially for a vintage like the 2018, cannot be achieved at the same time for a young Cabernet as for an old Merlot. ‘Micro-vats’ were installed and these, with the meticulous work carried out in the vineyards, have enabled us to carry out intra-plot vinifications. Our gentle extraction work has resulted in dense juices with plenty of character. Our quest for precision will continue in the cellar. For a year now, we have been selecting barrels with fine, delicate tannins that preserve the balance between structure and fruit.

Although this technical finetuning is only just starting, Château Berliquet is already revealing an elegant 2018 wine, one in which the terroir stamp of the clay slopes is carefully balanced with the minerality of the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau. Its attack is warm with pronounced aromas of yellow stone fruit, such as ripe apricots and fine, delicately-fleshed peaches. The harmony continues in a lovely tension; a deep-rooted minerality that runs through the wine over the palate. Fresh notes of cedar adorn the ‘third movement’. This sappy stamp reveals the character of the cru. A play of different layers in chiaroscuro with fascinating contrast and evolution…

Today, more than ever, we truly believe that the very essence of the great terroirs comes from their ability to produce flawless wines, whose structure and finesse defy the passing years. The 2018 vintage, the first to come out of our new adventure at the helm of Berliquet, is the promising first expression of our ambitions."

The 2018 Berliquet has not come together as well as I had hoped. There is a certain aggressiveness and edginess that keeps the wine from being fully expressive. It will be interesting to see if more time in bottle helps. This was the first vintage made by the Canon team led by Nicolas Audebert. The elements don't feel totally put together.

The 2018 Berliquet is composed of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc and has 14.5% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal a classic nose of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and pencil shavings with hints of unsmoked cigars, tilled soil and red roses. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of blue and black fruit preserves, supported by plush tannins and impressive freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Since the Chanel takeover and under Nicolas Audebert’s direction, the development of this site and the wine are truly impressive. I suspect a lot of selection has gone into making this 2018, and the results reveal a top-tier Saint-Émilion in the making.

Coming from the team at Canon and a blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Berliquet sports a dense purple hue as well as a classic Saint-Emilion, mineral-driven bouquet of red and black cherries, chocolate, graphite, roasted herbs, and chalky, rocky nuances. A big, rich, dense 2018, it has chewy tannins, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length.

Smoke, espresso, licorice, flowers, red pit fruit and crushed rocks pop up easily. The purity of the fruit, silky textures, lift and length allow this beauty to stand out. The wine has volume, depth, complexity and a velvety finish. The wine blends 78% Merlot with 22% Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Berliquet is more controlled on the nose than when tasted from barrel, though I still feel it needs more time to completely gel and would benefit from greater delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with toasty black fruit, tar and tobacco, leading to a dry and slightly smudged finish. Maybe I could find a better and fresher bottle, but this is par for the course.

This is delightful, with a fine chalky thread running through the middle of gently crushed plum and black cherry fruit flavors while sweet tobacco and bay accents hang in the background. Sneaky long. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. –JM

Blackberry, plum, blueberry and some stone and crushed cement on the nose. Full body with firm, chewy and ultra fine tannins that will soften nicely. I like the lightly smoked nuts and chocolate. Needs time to come around. Try after 2025.

The 2018 Berliquet is the first vintage that Nicolas Audebert and his team take full responsibility for. It has an opulent bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and cassis fruit, compared to the Canon just a touch strong. It is a powerful and dense Berliquet with a slightly heady finish, although at 14.2% alcohol it is under control. Since the vineyard contains less limestone than Canon, the imprimatur of the growing season speaks a little stronger.

Nez hyper raffiné avec une sensation de grand cabernet sur calcaire en grappe entière, évidence de la bouche, ronde et mûre, sans tanins et pourtant il y en a beaucoup ... Irrésistible !

Espresso, flowers, rocks, anise, stones and ripe fruits only tell part of the story. The wine is rich from all the plump, lushly textured, pure fruits, licorice and dark cocoa. The wine has volume, depth, complexity and velvety textures. This is just a joy to taste. The wine blends 78% Merlot with 22% Cabernet Franc and is aging in 45% new, French oak.

This was really Nicolas Audebert’s first vintage at Berliquet, since the property was acquired by Chanel in the autumn of 2017. The most significant, immediate change from 2018 came from noticing that blocks of the vineyard had Merlot and Cabernet Franc interplanted. These used to be harvested together. This year the different cultivars were flagged and harvested separately so as to achieve optimal ripeness for both varieties. The 2018 Berliquet is blended of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc and has 14.5% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with bold kirsch, blueberry compote and Black Forest cake with touches of cloves, lavender, menthol and lilacs. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, with lovely freshness lifting the densely packed blue and black fruit flavors, it has a velvety texture and long, earthy finish.

A fine and fruity red with blueberries and blackberries and hints of walnuts. Medium to full body and ultra fine tannins that melt into the body of the wine. It’s muscular in some ways. Lots of potential. Punchy.

A focused, restrained style, with cherry, plum and red currant notes that are carried by persistent chalky minerality. Shows a light tobacco shading throughout.
