Chauvin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2018

A HISTORY OF FAMILIES AND REVIVAL
Since 1881 and until Sylvie Cazes and her children took over in May 2014, the Ondet family took great care of Château Chauvin and gave it all their know-how.
Sylvie Cazes, a passionate winegrower who fell for the charms of this beautiful property, now wants to give Chauvin every opportunity for success in this new page in its history.
As a result, after buying the property, she undertook an ambitious programme of restructuring of the viticultural and winemaking techniques.
With precision and rigour, with respect for the terroir of Saint-Emilion and the conditions specific to each vintage, Sylvie Cazes and her team have created elegant, balanced, feminine and classy wines with the potential for ageing.

The 2018 Chauvin is rich and generous in the glass, with plenty of black cherry, espresso, menthol, licorice, chocolate and new oak flavors. Beautifully layered and sumptuous, Chauvin is so expressive today. The 2018 is quite lush, but it has enough energy to keep things in balance. Best of all, it will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Checking in as a mix of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 50% new oak, the 2018 Château Chauvin is a rich, powerful wine that clearly ranks with the finest wines from this address in the past decade or so. A dense purple hue is followed by awesome black raspberry and spiced cherry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, dried herbs, sandalwood, and tobacco. With full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins, it has some up-front appeal given its beautiful fruit and texture, yet it deserves 4-6 years in the cellar and will be a 20- to 25-year wine. Bravo!

With a strong floral accent, the wine adds wet earth, licorice and plums to its nuances. Medium-bodied, soft and silky, with sweet, dark red berries and thyme on the palate and in the finish, there is good freshness and complexity found here.

The 2018 Chauvin has a comparatively opulent bouquet for the vintage, though not over the top, offering black cherries, red plums, potpourri and light black pepper scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a fine underlying salinity and a precise finish that requires 3–4 years to open. Good potential.

Solidly built, with a core of steeped plum and blackberry fruit flavors liberally laced with warm earth, smoldering tobacco and dark licorice notes. A subtle savory edge adds energy to the finish. Drink now through 2029. 4,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. –JM

Blackberries and cherries, violets, herbs and some ash character to this full-bodied St.-Emilion. Savory, chewy texture with tight tannins and a medium finish. Try after 2024.

Still in barrel, due to be bottled in the next few months. This is gorgeous, plump fruit, beautifully controlled in feel, elegant and silky but gourmet and easy to love. This is a great wine and one of the best Chauvins I've tasted young. Underlines that for me 2018 is a great vintage in St Emilion, certainly for medium-term drinking, but I would feel pretty confident this will go the long haul, and it has seriously improved over ageing to this point. First year of HVE3-certification. 50% new oak, harvest September 26 to October 13. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

The 2018 Chauvin, the property of Sylvie Cazes, is very perfumed on the nose with small dark cherries, blueberry and light spicy top notes. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry, melted tar and graphite notes. This is nicely focused with a pleasing bitter edge on the finish that urges you back for another sip. Very fine.

Medium-bodied, polished, earthy and leafy with succulent cherries, plums, soft textures and roundness. The finish with its thyme-infused red fruits really hits the spot.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Chauvin is a little shy to begin, revealing pretty scents of wild blueberries, kirsch and warm black cherries followed by hints of violets and star anise. Full, wonderfully intense and concentrated, there is a lot of bright, crunchy fruit here with firm, rounded tannins and a refreshing lift to the long finish. Nicely done!

A pretty and polished young red with dark-berry and cherry character, medium body, fine tannins and a clean and vivid finish.

This is a good showing from Chauvin, owned by Sylvie Cazes. It has a vibrant and intense purple colour, with ink and graphite notes and significant tannins which cradle rather than smother the blackberry and bilberry fruits.
