L'Aventure - Optimus - Paso Robles 2020

The 2020 Vintage

In terms of style, the 2020 vintage is reminding me a lot of vintages like 2012, 2014 and 2016 which I like to describe as a “California” style vintage. What I mean by that is, we get a lot of fruit and fruit but also a lot of pleasure. Throughout the lineup though you still have this incredible balance, nice acidity, lots of brightness, velvet texture and long finish.”  – Chloe Asseo, Co-Owner & General Manager

“We had a nice crop for each varietal and even though everything is showing beautifully, I will say that the Mourvèdre and Grenache have amazed me the most for 2020. And let me tell you… to have these two grapes at the top of their game proves that the vintage is super nice and that the vines are older and better” –Stephan Asseo, Owner & Winemaker

Limpid and glossily textured, this is direct, plump, rich and spicy. This is smoky with plenty of mineral character. We have a little matchstick, maybe a hint of incense, nutmeg and cinnamon toast, grilled almonds and frangipane accompanying the baked plums, damsons and mulberries. A little cracked peppercorn too. Plump and plush on the palate, but never too ample or rich, the tight frame accentuating the sense of both shape and interest in the mouth and also the impression of depth and concentration. Chewy on the finish with the tannins showing their grain. The Petit Verdot brings a lot of additional interest to this.

The darkly floral 2020 Optimus impresses with a spicy blend of crushed black raspberries, dusty florals and olive tapenade. This is texturally thrilling and creamy in feel. Zesty acidity adds impressive energy, with depths of dark red fruits and savory spice that swirl throughout. It finishes incredibly long, communicating power and a classic tannic structure that frames the experience without slowing its momentum. Drinking Window 2025-2031

A blend of 58% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Optimus has a deep ruby color and a deep core of red and black cherries, chargrill, thyme, charcuterie and desiccated violet. The full-bodied palate is light on its feet with juicy acidity and approachable grainy tannins, and it has a long, layered finish.

Grilled meat, bacon fat, tobacco and olives to the nose that follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate with rich, creamy tannins. 58% syrah, 31% cabernet sauvignon, 11% petit verdot. Drink now or hold.

Starting off with the 2020 Optimus, it's a blend of 58% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot that spent 14 months in 65% new French oak. It displays a solid deeper purple hue to go with a peppery, darker berry, graphite, and smoky earth-driven bouquet. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a round, supple, mouth-filling texture, quality tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. It's clearly an outstanding wine but a step back from past vintages.

Owner Stephan Asseo is from Bordeaux, and continues to make waves from his limestone-dominant Paso Robles soils. Smoked red and black fruits, hedonistic with an extremely welcome kick of rust and crushed rock. This is classic Californian Syrah, fennel and turmeric, with a salt-rimmed limestone kick on the finish, and a chalky edge to the tannins. A warm and ripe vintage, using optical sorting for the first time. 65% new oak.

The entry level Optimus is always a sure bet, and the 2020 has lots to love, offering plenty of up-front dark fruit, pepper, and graphite notes in a full-bodied, deep, textured style.
