L'Aventure - Estate Cuvée - Paso Robles 2017

The 2017 vintage

2017 is what Stephan considers a classic vintage. The harvest was not too short nor too long. It was generally a cooler vintage early on with heat coming on in early September which accelerated the harvest.

In the 2017s are the perfect proof that big wine in terms of concentration doesn’t necessarily mean the best wine. They are a touch less dense (but still big) than the 2016s with a lot of balance and elegance. In other words, I would describe my 2017 as “classic”. There is a lot of fruit, a lot of pleasure and while the wines are firm, they are also quite silky. The 2017s are super expressive and very distinct, and while they are already approachable I can only imagine what a few more years in bottle will do.” - Stephan Asseo

There’s actually less Syrah in the blend here but this is the spiciest of the three wines in the current release. Incense, sage, nutmeg, cinnamon and a lovely crushed and candied violet florality. There’s a touch of eucalyptus and fresh mint, blood orange and mandarin rind too. What is so impressive is how young this feels, the only indication of the age being the sense of integration of the various elements. The spicing gently reinforced the florality which, again, is note quite what you would imagine. Original, distinctive and captivating. Also a fabulous expression and quite a radical interpretation of its terroir

Soft floral notes make this one of the fresher vintages in this lineup, more approachable at this point than the other vintages on dispay, and is the one I would suggest opening first. Clear spice notes, with cinammon and white pepper dominant on the opening alongside raspberry and black cherry fruits. This was a vintage that started hot, but cooled down in September and allowed harvest to continue to the end of October. As it sits in the glass, a creamier butterscotch and smoked caramel note appears, with a trace of heat tempered by the brushed slate and pencil lead finish that is such a signature of L'Aventure. 90% new oak, 10% one year old barrels.

A blend of 49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Estate Cuvée has a very deep purple-black color and explosive nose of black cherry and boysenberry preserves, crème de cassis, cedar, violet, burnt orange peel, baker’s chocolate, thyme, grilled meats, loamy earth and Indian spices. The silky, full-bodied palate is expansive, spicy and floral laced, with a firm but incredibly pixelated frame and great freshness on the long, dense finish. This merits another 3-5 years in bottle at least.

Opaque ruby. Expansive smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla and incense are complemented by hints of licorice and potpourri. Bright and energetic on the palate, offering penetrating blackberry, bitter cherry, blueberry and violet pastille flavors that become sweeter and deeper with air. Polished, harmonious tannins give shape and grip to an extremely long finish driven by sexy floral and spice notes.

The flagship 2017 Estate Cuvée (49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 21% Petit Verdot) spent 15 months in 90% new French oak, and I certainly blew the barre! review on this wine. It offers a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed violets, lead pencil, chocolate, and a rocking sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and seamless on the patate, it's about as polished and sexy as they corne in the vintage.

Lastly, the 2017 Estate Cuvee shows the effects of the heat spikes and has some firm, angular tannins that are buffered by lots of blackcurrant fruit. It has classic graphite, licorice, and lead pencil aromas, medium to full body, and good length, yet it’s certainly not going to make you forget this brilliant 2016. Nevertheless, my money is on it being an outstanding wine.

Tasted from barrel, the 2017 Estate Cuvee was difficult to read. Revealing rich aromas of currants and pencil shavings, it seems to be digesting its new oak effectively. On the palate, however, while it displays good freshness, it's currently dominated by grape and oak tannin, which clamp down, rendering it inscrutable. Let's see how it develops.
