L'Aventure - Estate Cuvée - Paso Robles 2020

The 2020 Vintage

In terms of style, the 2020 vintage is reminding me a lot of vintages like 2012, 2014 and 2016 which I like to describe as a “California” style vintage. What I mean by that is, we get a lot of fruit and fruit but also a lot of pleasure. Throughout the lineup though you still have this incredible balance, nice acidity, lots of brightness, velvet texture and long finish.”  – Chloe Asseo, Co-Owner & General Manager

“We had a nice crop for each varietal and even though everything is showing beautifully, I will say that the Mourvèdre and Grenache have amazed me the most for 2020. And let me tell you… to have these two grapes at the top of their game proves that the vintage is super nice and that the vines are older and better” –Stephan Asseo, Owner & Winemaker

This is the first time I have tasted this and it’s not quite what I expected. The Petit Verdot seems to act as diplomatic negotiator between the Syrah and the Cabernet Sauvignon producing a wonderful kind of alchemy. This is more restrained and initially more closed than Optimus. But it is very elegant and refined. Cedar, violet, a little dark pen ink, graphite and assorted dark berry and stone fruits, just a little spice. The minerality is striking – hyper-saline with a little hint of the rusty gate too. There is impressive density and concentration in the mid-palate and very fine-grained glossy tannins. Tight. Taut. Impressive.

A beguiling blend of dusty violets, crushed stone, musky black currants and grilled herbs makes the 2020 Estate Cuvée impossible to ignore. Racy yet supple, this soothes with its ripe red and black fruits while also exciting the palate through a core of zesty acidity. A staining of minerality lingers as the 2020 finishes with epic length and potency. Grippy tannins tug at the perimeters of the palate, leaving nuances of black licorice and clove to resonate. This radiant beauty has a very bright future. It's a blend of 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. Drinking Window 2026-2038

A blend of 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Estate Cuvée is another outstanding wine from L'Aventure in the challenging 2020 vintage, offering singular concentration and elegance. Deep ruby-purple, it has a pure core of cassis and slowly unfolding accents of licorice, cured meats, tobacco leaves, cedar and truffle. Full-bodied, juicy and alluring, it floods the mouth with layers of blue fruit, floral perfume and spice. It is supported by powdery tannins and boasts a tremendously long, detailed finish.

Really impressive depth here. Violets, blueberries, blackberries, graphite, ink and chalk to the nose. Rich, voluptuous and flavorful with firm, but silky tannins. Concentrated, restrainedly plush and muscular with a lingering finish that goes on and on. 45% syrah, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 15% petit verdot.

The 2020 Estate Cuvee is the flagship and checks in as 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Petit Verdot. It has a big, black-fruited bouquet with lots of graphite, smoky oak, chocolate, and chalky minerality. This carries to a full-bodied wine revealing the more savory tannins of the vintage, plenty of mid-palate flesh, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It picks up a beautiful sense of salinity with time in the glass and is unquestionably one of the top wines in this vintage.

I liked all three of the 2020 Aventure wines on tasting, so if you see Côte à Côte (18.5/20) or Optimus (18.5/20), you will be in excellent hands. But, the Estate Cuvée took the lead with staggeringly beautiful fruit, all set against cool, clean tannins that make this wine sing. I adore the Syrah/Cab blend (please see my recent The Great Australian Red competition results), and this wine takes this style and elevates it up to the top of the world! It is also drinking beautifully, which is absurd for a 2-year-old wine.

Nez de fusain, de fruits noirs, d'olive noire, d'épices et de fleurs. Bouche tendue et juteuse, une belle texture calcaire avec une allonge aérienne et une finale plus crayeuse que les deux précédentes cuvées.

The flagship wine of the estate, and certainly it delivers the most textural experience, with its clear limestone signature of salted caramel and pummice stone minerality. A burst of freshness drags you into the heart of things, and this is totally delicous, an awesome wine that tingles right though the palate, cassis, cranberry and blueberry fruits delivered with character and confidence.

Lastly, the 2020 Estate Cuvee is based on 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, all of which is resting in around 85% new French oak. It has a deep purple hue as well as rock star notes of blackberries, ground pepper, chocolate, and chalky minerality. I love its texture, purity, and balance, and this is certainly another beautiful, classic wine from this talented team.
