Pavillon blanc - Bordeaux 2022

The unique charm of Pavillon Blanc consistently exhibits a remarkable freshness through its salinity and mineral character. In 2022, a year not known for pronounced acidity, it still manages to effortlessly enchant your taste buds. Tasting this wine is akin to enjoying a bowl of Tremella Soup; its lightly jelly body radiates a sense of purity. Although it is commonly said that white wines from warm vintages lack balance, Pavillon Blanc 2022 undoubtedly provides a compelling rebuttal to this notion.

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc has turned out elegantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of white flowers, boxwood, pear, mango and lemongrass. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, it exhibits good depth at the core, bright acids and an attractively mordant finish. This has tightened up in bottle, to the extent that the warmth of the vintage would likely only be visible in a comparative tasting with a cooler year.

Harvested from the 18th of August, the 2022 Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc has a classic Margaux vibrancy and crisp style that belies the warmth and sunny nature of the vintage. Gorgeous citrus, crushed stone, mint, and sappy, floral nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, bright acidity (pH 3.10), and a great finish. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following decade.

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc has a light bouquet compared to recent vintages. It's clean and precise, but missing the usual vigor as I noted from barrel. The palate is actually more promising, with citrus lemon, lime and orange rind notes. It finishes with pleasing brightness and openness. This is not a long-term Pavillon—I would drink this over the next decade.

Grip and tension, this is not quite at the switchback-acidity levels of 2021, but there is a beautifully lilting salinity here, citrus, mango and pear, soft waves of white pepper, touch of mint leaf, steely finish, a great quality white in the vintage. If you'd like a dash of history with your wine note, it was Bruno Prats who planted the white vines in 1970 as he was manager of Château Margaux at the time. Harvest August 18-23, 14hl/h yield, Philippe Bascaules director.

Opulent and delicious with lots of green mango and pineapple aromas and flavors. Smoked cream and green apples. Showing salty, briny character, it’s dense but not heavy, flavorful and very long. Pear-drop candy at the end. Pure sauvignon blanc, as always. Rich yet lively and wonderful. Feels like a great Montrachet. One for the cellar. 8,000 bottles made. You just want to drink it. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc, 100% Sauvignon Blanc, is creamy, open-knit and quite seductive. A warm, dry year softened the edges, yielding an especially suave Blanc that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Pear, spice, chamomile, dried flowers and mint all meld together. The 2022 offers plenty of upfront appeal and tons of charm. Harvest began on August 18, one of the earliest starts here ever.

Smells ripe full of green apples, peach, orange, lime and lemon curd. Intense, depth and weight straight away with mouthwatering acidity, razor like, supporting the texture. There’s fatness but because of the acidity it doesn't stand out in a bad way, and the acidity is sharp and cooling which comes across as quite thrilling. Well worked, round with both drive and tension. Gorgeous white stone and citrus fruits, delicate but deep and sustained with shots of sharp lemon, sweet peach, blood orange and grapefruit. Fresh and fun. A success. Harvest 18 September.

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc was picked from 18 August, finishing five days later. Just 50% of the crop was used (14hL/ha), so there will be a second wine for the first time, which is as yet unnamed. Light white peach and orchard fruit on the nose, perhaps it is missing the vigor of the previous vintage? The palate is well balanced with grapefruit and touches of tangerine, quite linear in style, good tension with a bright finish that just lacks the complexity of the best whites from this First Growth.

Pale colour. Grapefruit, lemon curd, tonic water aromas. Sweet grapefruit, lemon glacé fruits, superb mid palate buoyancy and fresh mineral acidity. Lovely richness and freshness with superb mineral length. A touch phenolic at the finish lengthens the palate. Sauvignon Blanc

Pale gold in colour, maintaining pale green reflections even in such a hot vintage, and this delivers a sharp almost steely feel, with a white flower and citrus kick. The luscious aspect of the year comes through with lemon confit through the mid palate, and overall the fruit flavours and textures are creamier than in 2021, but this has nuance and lift. The team at Margaux, led by Philippe Bascaules, is always so careful to avoid skin contact in the whites, and only use the first fraction of the juice that comes out of the press;, and it pays off in this exceptional wine. 3.18ph (higher than last year but still low enough to give clear grip). Harvest for the whites from August 18 for five days. 14h/h yield, extremely low, with 50% of the crop in Pavillon Blanc (they are introducing a 2nd white wine this year, although name not yet announced).

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, with very tiny yields this year of only 14 hl/ha. It waltzes out with gregarious notes of fresh peaches, green mango, and lime cordial with fragrant wafts of jasmine, chalk dust, and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate is coated with citrus and tropical fruit layers with expressive chalky sparks and a long zesty finish.

I'd say the finest white coming out of the Médoc, and clearly in the top tier of whites in all of Bordeaux, the 2022 Pavillon Blanc De Margaux is, as always, 100% Sauvignon Blanc that was raised in 20% new 300-ltier barrels. It has an incredible nose of honeyed limes, caramelized lemon zest, green almonds, mint, and crushed stone. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has a great mid-palate, vibrant acidity, and a great finish. Sauvignon Blanc doesn't get much better (if at all.)

On the palate, the 2022 Pavillon Blanc retains terrific freshness and is done in a style that lies somewhere in between more generous years such as 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the more saline years like 2017 and 2021. This is a very creamy, layered dry white. Here, too, I am struck by the wine’s precision. Drinking window : 2026-2037

Lemon chiffon, lawn grass, pears, vanilla, white peach, and tangerine skin nuances form the core of this wine. The wine is forward, sweet, creamy, and pure, with a buttery accent on the long, fruit-packed, fresh, vibrant backend. The wine will be a pleasure to enjoy on release and over the following decade or longer. The wine is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.13.4% ABV. 3.18 pH. Yields were only 14 hectoliters per hectare, so not much of this wine was made. If you are a fan, act quickly. This is the white wine of the vintage! Drink from 2024-2037.

This is an powerful white with superb density and phenolic muscule. It's full-bodied and really impressive. Opulent and rounded. Exotic and muscular. Great white. Feels like a great Montrachet. One for the cellar. 8,000 bottles made. pH 3.18.
