Eglise Clinet - Pomerol 2021

Extremely complex and subtle with blackberries, wild forest fruits, orange peel, bark and mushroom on the nose. Perfumed. Full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are polished and extremely long, going on for minutes. Structured and layered yet compressed on the finish. Some terra-cotta and stoney undertones. This shows old-vine character and the essence of 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Give this three or four years in bottle, but it’s surprisingly attractive now.

The 2021 L’Eglise-Clinet is stellar. Dark, dense and also a touch somber, the 2021 is laced with generous black fruit, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and incense. Readers will have to give this time to come together. I especially admire its substance, textural resonance and overall balance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2021 can look forward to years of exceptional drinking once the tannins soften a bit.

The 2021 L'Eglise Clinet is one of the more muscular, powerful wines of the vintage, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, incense, licorice, spices and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a broad attack that segues into a mid-palate framed by ripe, powdery, richly extracted tannins, it's a dense, youthfully introverted Pomerol that's defined more by its terroir and winemaking than it is by the vintage.

This is a very exciting L’Eglise Clinet with every element of La Petit Eglise’s armoury but with more volume, more richesse, slightly more structure, and infinite detail. The perfume is sensational and exotic and very real - like walking down a country lane in the autumn with your senses on red alert. The oak acidity and tannin are all perfectly entwined, but they take a back seat allowing the splendid fruit to shine. This thrilling wine is one of the most expressive and refined vintages from this brilliant label. Noëmie Durantou Reilhac mentioned that she found the calmness of going into a church in this wine. I think that this is an atmospheric image, as long as this moment coincided with a full peeling of bells coming to a dramatic stop. The cacophony and subsequent silence, with the aerial vibrations diminishing above the congregation, was akin to what was happening above my body after I tasted this wine. 19.5+

Medium-bodied with very fine-textured tannins. Delicious sweet and salty and mineral character. Blackberries, violets, cloves and dark olives. Peaches, too. All focused, fresh and in balance. Long, seamless finish. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc.

The Grand Vin 2021 Château L'Eglise Clinet checks in as 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc that's resting in 75% new French oak and hit 14% alcohol. It's another medium-bodied, fresh, elegant, incredibly classic wine from this great estate that has pure dark, almost blue fruits, loads of floral and leafy herb nuances, integrated acidity, and beautiful tannins. I love its purity, and while it shines for its elegance and purity, it has good density.

Medium-deep colour. Abundant blackberry, dark plum aromas with liquorice aniseed notes. Richly flavoured and chocolaty with blackberry jam, dark plum fruits, plentiful brambly tannins and underlying toasty/ marzipan/ vanilla notes. Very good density and richness, but tannins are a touch rustic. Characterful vintage. 85% merlot, 15% cabernet franc. 75% new French oak. 14% alc

Église Clinet recreates an Iliad myth in 2021 with its 14% alcohol, steely body, and outstanding concentration. Looking at its harvest timing alone, September 27 to 29 for Merlot and September 29 for Cabernet Franc, Église Clinet did not opt for a late harvest, but it somehow manages to show an incredible phenolic ripeness and concentration, with the violet fragrance embracing you towards the finish. When tasting this wine, I was not only excited but also moved by Noëmie and Constance’s commitment to maintaining the Durantou quality, by the time and efforts they devoted to the vineyards, and by their respect for the gravel and clay field beneath their feet. The 2021 vintage is the best stage for them to prove their capability. Deep ruby in color, roses, truffles, chocolate, clay and a touch of mint are easy to find in the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, bright, elevated, crisp and with a chalky edge to the finish, you also find fresh, sweet plums, cocoa-dusted cherries and a bit of chocolate covered orange rind in the endnote. From a blend of 85% % Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, 14% ABV, the harvest took place September 27-September 29. It is great to see continuing strong wines from the Durantou family. Drink from 2025-2050. 94-96

The 2021 L'Eglise-Clinet was picked September 27–29, a rapid harvest within three days; winemaker Noëmie Durantou told me she wanted to beat the forecasted rain that would have diluted the fruit. Raised in 75% new oak, this has a less concentrated, mineral-driven bouquet that bides its time, offering nuanced pine cone scents with aeration. The palate is clearly built around elegance, with its finely chiseled tannins and wonderful crushed stone notes. Perhaps a more streamlined l'Eglise-Clinet, showing wonderful precision. This Pomerol never tries to outdo its limitations or ape previous vintages, lending it an intangible sense of honesty. Beautiful. (14.0% alcohol)

The 2021 L'Eglise-Clinet is a spherical, sensual Pomerol of uncommon depth and intensity. Racy and voluptuous, with terrific depth, the 2021 is striking. Crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, spice, menthol and licorice all build as the 2021 opens in the glass. The combination of power and finesse is remarkable. I especially admire the energy and focus in the 2021. This is the first vintage that includes a parcel of Cabernet Franc that was previously used for the Petite Eglise.

Bravo !

A deep, serious wine, the 2021 L'Eglise Clinet unwinds in the glass with notions of wild berries and plums mingled with dark chocolate, sweet loamy soil, warm spices, violets and black truffle. Full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's rich and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and plenty of ripe, powdery tannin that nods to its origins in a sector of Pomerol capable of producing some of the appellation's most structured, long-lived wines. It's a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

A dark, serious brooding nose full of black fruits, truffle, rose, violet and dark chocolate. The palate is different however giving succulent and lively red fruits - sweet/sour strawberries and red cherries, so fresh and sincere, so perfectly presented with the bitter touches balanced against sweetness, racy acidity and fine tannins. An easy-to-like wine, with personality and style and just a feeling of pure joy about it! Not rich, heavy or opulent but taking the most joyous elements from the vintage and putting them the glass, still with structure and depth. Great winemaking on show by Noëmie Durantou Reilhac. Ageing in 70% new oak.
