Virginie de Valandraud - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Valandraud, a dream came true

Château Valandraud represents the culmination of the passion of wine enthusiasts Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. Founded in 1991, Château Valandraud originated from a modest 0.6 ha vineyard, which was purchased with the couple's entire savings. This small plot, located in the Fongaban Valley near neighbors Pavie Macquin and La Clotte, inspired the estate's name—'Val' from valley and 'Andraud', Murielle's family name, a presence in the Saint Emilion registry since 1459.

Virginie de Valandraud, the second wine

Named in honor of Murielle Andraud and Jean Luc Thunevin’s daughter, Virginie, this cuvée was introduced in 1992 as the second wine of Château Valandraud. Starting with the 1997 vintage and coinciding with the expansion of the Thunevin vineyards within the Saint Emilion appellation, Virginie de Valandraud has been nurtured from its own distinct vineyards. It maintains its unique identity while being cultivated and vinified in the same meticulous manner as Valandraud, under the expertise of our consistent technical team in our cellars.

The 2023 vintage

Virginie de Valandraud remains a wine in its own, with its mosaic of plots contributing to the complexity of this cru. This year, young, vigorous vines of uniform maturity have joined the blend. The result is a wine that is even more balanced and delicious.

The 2023 Virginie de Valandraud has a well-defined bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit laced with violet and incense. Very nicely controlled and the 100% new oak is deftly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and perhaps here that élevage entirely in new wood just imparts a little too much in the way of wood tannins. In some ways, it is an old-fashioned style of Saint-Émilion that you found more commonly 20 years ago, although it is smooth and well-made for that style.

This is very attractive, clean and crisp, with firmness and tension on the palate. Medium-bodied with crunchy minerality and beautiful acidity. Classy and well made. 55% sauvignon blanc and 45% semillon. Drink or hold.

Toucher de tannin satiné, vin séveux de grand charme structurel et aromatique, paré d’accents délicieux de myrtille et de mûre.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 5% each Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Château Valandraud Virginie De Valandraud has a rocking mix- of red, blue, and black fruits as well as graphite, crushed stone, and savory flowers. This medium to full-bodied, round, supple Saint-Emilion has a beautiful sense of elegance, fine tannins, and a great finish.

Enjoyably textured and brambled berry fruit character. Bright and vivid, fresh fig and orange peel bring focus, anis bitterness on the finish. Jean-Luc Thunevin owner, harvest September 13 to October 4, 3.7ph, 100% new oak for ageing. Made from 15ha of vines, as 2ha previously used have now been moved into Valandraud as the vines have aged.

The 2023 Virginie de Valandraud is bright, punchy and full of character. Crushed flowers, mint and spice weave through a core of layered red fruit. Floral overtones reappear to extend the beautifully persistent finish. There's terrific freshness here. Superb.

This shows depth and power, yet it comes across as elegant and refined, too. Medium- to full-bodied with an impressive structure that lasts long on the palate. The tannins are super-fine and pixelated. 90% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.
