Vin de Constance - Afrique du Sud 2022

Vin de Constance, a MUST HAVE in any winelover’s cellar

Dating back to 1685 and described as one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, with views across False Bay.
The 146-hectare estate originally formed part of Constantia, the vast property established by the first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, who chose the valley not only for its beauty, but also for its decomposed granite soils on slopes gently cooled by ocean breezes.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage stood out for its intensity and precision, shaped by a late start and a condensed harvest window. Warm, dry conditions dominated the season, with minimal rainfall and increased sun exposure contributing to excellent ripening.
The growing season brought some pressure due to wind and heat, but balanced canopy growth and careful vineyard management delivered fruit of exceptional quality. Temperatures remained steady through harvest, avoiding the intense spikes often seen in late summer.

Tasting notes:

Expressive and layered, VDC 2022 opens with aromas of fresh apricot, quince, dried pineapple, and persimmon, accented by fig preserve, salted caramel, elderflower, and subtle spice notes. Vibrant on the palate, it reveals peach, nectarine, dried mango, and litchi balanced by a refreshing salinity and elegant oak integration. The finish is long, dry, and delicately spiced — a refined, memorable vintage.

The 2022 Vin de Constance was picked from 15 March until 7 April, with fewer picks since Matt Day said the team is more confident about when and how to pick. There were 18 passes through the vines compared to 30 in the past. There is one week maceration on the skins with pumpovers, then a pied de cuve is made with further fermentation on the skins with inoculated Sauternes strain of yeast. It went through a one or two hour press, with a lot of blending done in the small hours of the morning until all the tanks are around 165g/L residual sugar with 14 degrees alcohol, at which point Day finds that the fermentation stops naturally. It is aged for 18 months in 500-litre barrels with 50% new oak and a further 20 months (slightly longer) in barrel. It has a very pure and perfumed nose with wild honey, yellow fruit, quince and then hints of rose water and white flowers that emerge with time. The palate is viscous on the entry with exquisite balance. There is richness, as you expect from a Vin de Constance, but there is also no sense of heaviness and plenty of tension on the finish. Very precise and full of energy, this is a sophisticated Vin de Constance that will age beautifully in bottle.

Fragrant, enticing aromas of apricot jam, jasmine, orange rind, mangoes, cloves and creme caramel waft from the glass, combining with candied ginger and cinnamon rolls. It’s luscious and concentrated. The sweet fruit is balanced by bright acidity with spicy, savory and zesty components. Very long and beautiful. Drink or hold.

This is a super-long, lemon-barley-drenched wine that shows a captivating, singular theme of fruit that will propel it forward for fifty years.  There are occasionally vintages of VdC that drink well in their youth, and while this is undeniably delicious, it is patently obvious there is so much more to come when the mass of flavour fragments to reveal its glittering core.  Future-heaven!

(Constantia; 100% Muscat de Frontignan; 168.6 g/L of residual sugar; pH 3.81; 13.6% alcohol). Wild floral honey. Confit melon. Lanolin. 50 shades of citrus. A little peach and peach kernel. Fresh, racy, lithe and engaging with just enough acidity to keep this fresh. Burnt sugar and butterscotch. Long and sustained on the finish which achieves an exquisite balance of sweetness and bitterness.
