Tour Figeac - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

The estate

Separated from Château Figeac in 1879, the estate is located between Château Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac on Pomerol border. It has belonged to the Otto Rettenmaier family for more than 50 years.

HARVEST 2022

Weather forecast 2022: April started with a small period of frost (3 nights) without much
consequence on our vineyard. Then, July and August were particularly hot and dry but
some rains at key moments accompanied the Merlots as well as the Cabernet Francs at an
excellent maturity.

The Harvest: The harvest took place with very positive weather from 12 to 23 September.
Three words to define the vintage.

I was surprised to learn from the winemaking consultant that Château La Tour Figeac was hardly affected by the hot 2022 vintage. The tannins in this vintage are more powerful than usual, but the aromas are truly outstanding: 65% Merlot brings the sweetness of shortbread, strawberry jam, and cherry cake, while 35% Cabernet Franc adds scents of pine, ginseng, and dried rose petals. Overall, this wine is an excellent expression of the sandy gravel soil in the 2022 vintage.

Sharp shot of lemongrass among the raspberry and red cherry fruits, this has lift and character, good quality, 40% new oak for ageing, 30hl/h yields, 13.5ha vineyard.

The 2022 La Tour Figeac has a completely seductive bouquet of rose, cassis, mulberries and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it has a fleshy core of fruit, enveloping and layered texture and a long, perfumed and lively finish. This blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc is a real success and a wine that always rewards patience.

Never the biggest or richest wine in a vintage, the 2022 Château La Tour Figeac is nevertheless beautifully balanced and elegant, with a pretty perfume of spicy red and black fruits, savory flowers, camphor, and spicy wood. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a supple, elegant mouthfeel, it should drink nicely over the coming 15 years or so.

2027-2037 93/100

A juicy and expressive red with plum and berry character as well as hints of crushed stones and grilled citrus. Medium- to full-bodied, it has juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. 65% merlot and 35% cabernet franc. 10% whole-bunch fermentation. Very attractive now but even better in two or three years.

The 2022 La Tour Figeac is elegant, polished and refined. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, blood orange and floral overtones lift from the glass. Fine, nuanced tannins frame it all in an effortless, exquisite Saint-Émilion that has so much to offer. It's all class and finesse here.

Rich and beautifully textured, this has nice appeal with subtle density to the concentrated fruits but with fine and firm tannins that give a cool refreshing aspect. Doesn't quite give the excitement and vibrancy of some, but this is really well worked, clearly defined and detailed with balance and a push of fruit. Loses a bit of punch on the finish with some stalky, herbal notes.

Heard from the winemaker's consultant, Château La Tour Figeac was not greatly affected by the scorching vintage of 2022; however, I still perceive a slightly over ripeness and more robust tannins compared to previous years. Nonetheless, the bouquet is truly remarkable: the 65% Merlot bestows upon it the sweetness of sponge cake, strawberry jam, and cherry cake, while the 35% Cabernet Franc imparts the herbal and fruity aromas of pinecones and ginseng. All in all, this wine exemplifies an good expression of its terroir (sandy gravel) in the vintage of 2022.

The 2022 La Tour Figeac offers plump, red plum and crushed strawberry on the nose, though it is missing a little delineation. The palate is sweet and very oaky on the entry, dominated by wood tannins, and dark chocolate on the powdery finish. Not my style.

Medium deep crimson. Musky red cherry, red plum, red liquorice, confectionary aromas and flavours with musky notes, fine lacy firm tannins, attractive mid-palate volume and long fresh acidity. Sweet and sour wine. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc. Roughly 50% new oak.)

Chocolate block, rosemary, cracked pepper, this has spicy depths and a rich texture. A big St Emilion in a big vintage, with black cherry and damson fruit balanced by rosemary and sage herbal notes, stays just on the right side of controlled, and on the right side of heat. A little closed on the finish with a dash of bitter aniseed, but that is entirely in line with this type of construction, and will soften over ageing. Juice on the close of play. 40% new barrels.

The 2022 La Tour Figeac, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly emerges with fragrant notes of kirsch, wild blueberries, and redcurrant jelly, leading to suggestions of rose oil and cinnamon toast. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegant and graceful, with well-knit acidity and soft tannins, finishing perfumed.

A pretty, elegant, forward effort (which is what this terroir always seems to yield), the 2022 Château La Tour Figeac has lots of up-front red and black fruits that give way to more tobacco, loamy soil, and baking spice-like nuances with time in the glass. It's not massive but shines for its balance and complexity, and it has ripe tannins and is loaded with charm. It should drink nicely right out of the gate, yet I suspect it will have 15+ years of prime drinking. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes.

The 2022 La Tour Figeac is a super-classic wine from this sector within Saint-Émilion. Linear and precise, with striking aromatic presence La Tour Figeac bristles with tension from start to finish. White pepper, chalk, tobacco and dried herbs lend notable aromatic presence. La Tour Figeac could very well turn out to be one of the Sleepers of the year. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2027-2047

Quite floral in nature, the wine is elegant, fresh, soft, and silky. The fruits are vibrant, fresh, and supple, finishing with black plums, espresso, chocolate, and minty nuances. Drink from 2025-2045.

A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc (vinified with some whole bunch), the 2022 La Tour Figeac bursts with aromas of plums, raspberries, orange zest, spices and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, suave and elegant, it's a seamless, lively and perfumed wine that will delight Bordeaux purists.

This is meaty and structured with firm tannins and deep dark fruit underneath. Impressive volume and length. Full-bodied and long. Very cabernet franc here. Could be best ever.
