Tour Carnet - Haut-Médoc 2023

La Tour Carnet, Grand Cru Classé in 1855

The origins of the Château go back to the 12th century, which makes it the oldest Château in the Médoc. Its architecture is of medieval type with a tower built in 1120, surrounded by a moat. It has known famous owners, including the family of Michel de Montaigne, one of the greatest French philosophers and who was twice Mayor of Bordeaux. The vineyard of Château La Tour Carnet was established there in 1409.

Owned by Bernard Magrez, the terroir of Château La Tour Carnet is a true mosaic of very diverse soils, particularly suitable for Merlot. Always striving for excellence, Bernard Magrez is a forerunner in technological and agronomic research, as evidenced by the collection of 75 grape varieties planted at La Tour Carnet, in order to observe their adaptability and find a potential response to the challenges of climate change.

The 2023 La Tour Carnet offers dark berry fruit, briar, graphite and light tea leaf scents that open in the glass, quite classical in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, touches of black pepper and quite a noticeable seaweed note lending a little complexity on the finish. Quite solid style but, again, fresh and sapid.

A juicy red showing good balance and fruit. Aromas of spiced red berries, red cherries and hints of paprika and cedar. Juicy and expressive, with a medium body, lightly chewy tannins and a medium-long finish. Merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Drink now or hold.

Spicy red and black fruits, new leather, flowers, and some tobacco notes all define the 2023 Château La Tour Carnet, a pure, medium-bodied, nicely balanced 2023 that has plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, juicy acidity, and a great finish. It's another beautiful wine under the Magrez umbrella that has tons of fruit as well as character.

Flowers, tobacco and red fruits define the core of this wine on the nose, and on the palate. Medium-boded, with more freshness than in previous vintages, the wine ends with a complicating nuance of citrus in the finish that I really like. You can enjoy this in its youth. Drink from 2026-2040. 91-93 Pts.

The inky depths that you expect of a Magrez property are fully in play here. Intense, concentrated, good tannic structure, inky and powerful, this has depth and lift, and is full of Haut-Médoc character. 36hl/ha yields.

The 2023 La Tour Carnet is superb. La Tour Carnet is one of Bordeaux's hidden gems. The 2023 is another fine edition. Dried herbs, leather, incense, licorice, crushed flowers, chocolate and spice lend notable aromatic complexity. Medium in body and nuanced, the 2023 has so much to offer. In this vintage, it benefits from the addition of fruit from Bernard Magrez's estate in Saint-Estèphe. In some tastings, La Tour Carnet has been more opulent. Either way, few wines in Bordeaux offer a better mix of quality and value.

The 2023 La Tour Carnet was picked from September 25 to October 6 at 43hL/ha and includes more Merlot this year, at 75% of the blend. It is maturing in 60% new oak. The 2023 presents a well-defined bouquet of blackberry and raspberry fruit, with touches of cedar developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a little chewy in the mouth, with nice grip and a lightly spiced finish. This is a fine, what you might call “dependable," La Tour Carnet that will give a lot of pleasure over 12 to 15 years.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brighter on the rim. Fresh cherry fruit, hints of nougat and blackberries, tangerine zest, subtle wood spice. Medium body, red fruit, discreet tannins, good freshness, already accessible, a versatile food wine.

A structured La Tour Carnet with dark currant, bark and wet earth. Medium to full body. Should develop nicely.
