Dame de Montrose - Saint-Estèphe 2023

Château Montrose, the revelation of a unique terroir

Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Château Montrose in 2006. Like ambassadors, they seek to reveal, accompany, and respect this unique terroir, spanning over 90 hectares in one contiguous plot, ideally located on the banks of the Gironde estuary. 2022 marks the beginning of a new chapter for the estate. Pierre Graffeuille, former CEO of Domaines Delon, is appointed as the General Manager of SCDM Domaines de la Familles Bouygues and continues the development of the properties managed over the past decade by Hervé Berland.

La Dame de Montrose, a reliable wine

La Dame de Montrose was created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who single-handedly managed Château Montrose from 1944 to 1960. Elaborated from the same vineyard and with the same rigor as the Grand Vin, La Dame de Montrose, derived from a second selection, is a predominantly Merlot wine that is supple and silky.

La Dame de Montrose is a reliable value from Saint-Estèphe that reaches its maturity sooner. Its pronounced red fruit aromas represent another expression of the terroir in a style of its own, dense but accessible, seductive but distinguished.

The 2023 vintage: Return to the origins of the terroir

Early and generous, this vintage was relatively dry and hot compared with the average of the last 40 years. 2023 stands out for the stability of its climatic profile throughout the growing season, with the exception of a heatwave at the end of the cycle, which helped the grapes to ripen evenly. This balanced vintage expresses the true nature of its terroir...

La Dame de Montrose 2023 gives pride of place to the purity of the estate's Merlot. A silky tannic structure, underpinned by delicious, elegant notes of red fruit and white flowers.

The 2023 La Dame de Montrose has a much lighter, airier bouquet compared to the previous vintage, with tobacco-tinged black fruit, hints of liquorice and sea spray. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry, fine tannins, quite bright and tensile, with noticeable acidity and salinity keeping this on its toes toward the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle, and you will have a fine Deuxième Vin.

The second wine of the estate is the 2023 La Dame De Montrose, which checks in as 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised in mostly used barrels. It's a ripe, forward second wine offering ripe red and blue fruits, tons of floral and spicy nuances, medium to full body, and a round, supple, elegant mouthfeel. This ripe, layered, seamless beauty will drink nicely for 10-12 years or more.

Dame de Montrose (St-Estèphe; 61% Merlot; 32% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Petit Verdot; 2% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 48 hl/ha; 13.8% alcohol; some green harvesting during the heatwave period, especially on young vines; tasted at Montrose with Charlotte Bouygues and Pierre Graffeuille). Darker berry and stone fruits when tasted after Tronquoy. Damson, above all, with its beguiling aromatics and integral acidity. Walnut. Crushed black raspberry, blueberry, bramble, all with a very natural sweetness. Ample, but not too ample. Radiant and brilliantly crunchy in its fruit signature. Excellent, with lovely purity and precision. Harmony and elegance. Succulence and sapidity. Highly recommended.

The 2023 La Dame de Montrose is deep garnet-purple in color. The nose is so floral, with notes of iris and lavender opening out to a core of black raspberries and mulberries plus hints of dusty soil and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is tight-knit and lively, with lightly chewy tannins and a ferrous finish. The blend is 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.50.

Orange blossoms, flowers, red berries, and black cherry aromas show up with ease. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, vibrant, fresh, long, and spicy. The fruits are clean, energized, and lively. This is going to offer its significant charms shortly after release. The wine blends 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 Pts.

Silky tannins with grip and intensity, a lovely balance of texture and fresh acidities. Slate and pummice stone grip, this is delicious, with appellation typicity in its powerful black fruits, but measured with a saline kick on the finish. In organic conversion, to be certified 2025.

The 2023 La Dame de Montrose is a rich, heady wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha are beautifully amplified. Explosive to the core, the 2023 possesses tons of aromatic intensity and pure volume. This showy, Merlot-based Dame is quite alluring.

The 2023 La Dame de Montrose has a light and slightly tertiary nose, with touches of tea leaves infusing the black fruit. The palate is soft and supple on the entry, with licorice-tinged black fruit and a rounded, cracked-black-pepper-tinged finish. There’s good body for a Deuxième Vin. This will give a decade of drinking pleasure.

Another strong performance from this bottling, which dependably numbers among Bordeaux's top three or four second wines, the 2023 La Dame de Montrose reveals aromas of cassis, pencil shavings and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and dense palate that's polished, pure and layered, with sweet tannins, lively acids and a saline finish. It's a blend of 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Crisp and crunchy cranberry aromas on the nose, fresh and vibrant - herbal, floral, fruity. Smooth and supple, so lively, bright and acidic, really lifted and almost verging on tart. I love it though, manages to be fresh yet with ripeness of tannins that slowly expand in the mouth while also giving structure and a well-defined outline. Streamlined and straight. Polished and characterful with lovely purity of fruit. Ageing 12 months, using 5% foudre 5% amphora, 10% new oak and the rest aged barrels. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.
