Du Tertre - Margaux 2023

Château du Tertre, a timeless elegance

Château du Tertre is located on one of the highest gravel ridges in the Médoc. Its history began in the 18th century with Pierre Mitchell, an Irish merchant who fell in love with the Bordeaux region and its wines. As the founder of Bordeaux's first glassworks, he fulfilled one of his dearest dreams by creating his own vineyard estate. Other famous families followed in his footsteps, including the Albada Jelgersma family, who purchased the estate in 1997 and made significant investments to allow this Grand Cru Classé of 1855 to express all of its elegance.

In March 2021, the Helfrich family took over to write a new chapter in the history of Château du Tertre. The family shares the same quest of excellence, which is a tradition in motion.

The 2023 Vintage:

Cynthia Capelaerer, manager of the estate, tells you about the vintage:

Tasting notes:

A compelling alliance of concentrated ripe fruits and precise, persistant structure characterizes Château du Tertre 2023. The
generosity of the Merlot (15%) combines harmoniously with the power, freshness and precision of the Cabernet Sauvignon (70%). Faithful to the property’s style, the Cabernet Franc (11%), from 60 year old vines, completes the blend with elegance and finesse. A final touch of Petit-Verdot (4%) brings structure and colour resulting in a definitively balanced wine.

The 2023 Château du Tertre has a more Merlot-driven bouquet, more red fruit here with violet and peony scents manifesting with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fleshy and ripe, a keen line of acidity with a lightly peppered, quite elegant finish. This performs above my expectations from the barrel.

Lovely fruit, with blackberry, dark chocolate, walnut and meat aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit, creamy tannins and just a hint of chocolate. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. Needs three or four years of bottle age. Drink after 2028.

The 2023 Château du Tertre is very closed on the nose. Despite coaxing, it only reluctantly offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the mélange of red and black fruit. Silky in texture, it reveals some powdery dark chocolate notes towards the finish, though it feels short—like a film missing a couple of crucial scenes. Drink this Margaux over the next 15 years.

Smoky red and black fruits, iron, tobacco, and chocolaty notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Du Tertre, a deeply hued Margaux that has a more medium-bodied, supple, elegant profile on the palate. I love its balance, and it has ripe tannins and outstanding length. It has that paradoxical ripe yet lively, fresher style of the vintage and should drink nicely with just a few years of bottle age.

The 2023 du Tertre is deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts with bold suggestions of baked red and black plums, blackcurrant jelly, and dried bay leaves, plus hints of wet slate and pencil shavings. The light to medium-bodied palate is a tad thin, with lightly chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on an herbal note.

Chocolate, cherries, flowers, espresso, and spearmint nuances shine on the nose. The palate is soft, fruity, fresh, and is not shy about already starting to let you enjoy its black, and red fruit-filled, creamy-textured charms. Drink from 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Enjoyably velvety and silky fresh aromatics, this is Cabernet dominant in character, meaning slim and savoury, and hard to argue with. Has plenty of grip and power as it opens, with cassis bud, blackberry and crayon, together with gentle crushed mint leaf and smoked earth. 60% new oak for ageing, Helfich family new owners since 2021, Cynthia Capelaere estate director, Romain Beurienne technical director, continuing to work biodynamically as they have since 2008. Blend completed early during October, 60% new oak for ageing. The Cabernet Franc vines here are more than 60 years old, and it's an estate that is getting a lot of love and investment since the new owners arrived.

The 2023 du Tertre is deep, powerful and resonant right out of the gate. Dark-toned fruit, chocolate, lavender, mocha and dried herbs are broadly sketched. This heady, layered Margaux is certainly not shy. All it could use is a bit more polish in its contours.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Ripe plums, some nougat, delicately spicy, candied orange zest in the underlay. Medium body, red cherries, subtle tannins, mineral, balanced, subtle fruit expression in the finish. A versatile wine for the table.

As this estate's extensive restructuring begins to come to fruition, the 2023 du Tertre contains fully 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, as replanted parcels begin to be included in the grand vin, complemented by 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot. Offering up aromas of dark berries, licorice, lilac and mint, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a notably concentrated, serious core by this estate's typically charming standards, revealing sweet structuring tannins and a succulent, seamless profile. In short, du Tertre's renaissance continues.

The lead pencil, blackberries and blackcurrants are very intense on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins and a creamy, refined texture that turns to a medium finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot.
