Suduiraut - Sauternes 2022

Suduiraut, an iconic Sauternes wines

A rigorous selection, in the vineyard and in the cellars, guarantees the elaboration of the wines of Château Suduiraut, representing the successful expression of this exceptional terroir. The Premier Grand Cru Classé has belonged to Axa Millésimes since 1992, alongside Châteaux Pichon Baron and Pibran and is one of the 4 largest vineyard of the appellation.

Its 91-hectare vineyard lies on sandy-clay soils. The stones capture the heat of the sun and thus allow the grapes to reach maturity more quickly. This unique terroir gives the wine its opulence.

The chosen proportions of the grape varieties are decisive in the unique profile of the wines. 90% of the Suduiraut vineyard is made of Semillon and 10% of Sauvignon Blanc.

The concentration of this vintage is akin to royal jelly, with residual sugar reaching an astonishing 190 g/l. Facing the challenges of the hot, dry, and low-yielding vintage like 2022, Château Suduiraut achieved an incredible level of freshness through the natural concentration of small berries. Compared to traditional vintages, this wine has a lesser presence of saffron and curry spices, but instead boasts more fruitiness of dried apricots, peach preserves, longan, floral honey, and sugarcane. However, the eager spiciness of ginger reveals the unexpected complexity of this vintage in full force. During En Primeur, I predicted it would have an exceptionally long lifespan, but to my surprise, even right after bottling, it already displays the proud character of a noble rot wine.

Honeyed orange, caramelized citrus, flowers, spice, and buttery nuances all emerge from the 2022 Château Suduiraut, a decadent Suduiraut that has a vibrant sense of freshness, perfect balance, and a gorgeous finish. It's a brilliant, opulent Sauternes that's just about impossible to resist yet should evolve for decades if well stored.

The 2022 Suduiraut presents a bewitching bouquet of dried honey, lanolin, saffron and light orange pith scents, all harmonious and well delineated. This might be better than I estimated from barrel. The palate is balanced with great density and weight, a viscous texture, a fine bead of acidity and a hint of passion fruit toward the intense finish. Outstanding. (190 g/l residual sugar)

So many aromas of dried apricots, turmeric, pine nuts and botrytis. Full-bodied with 190 grams of sugar and incredible length and richness. The salted caramel, light nuts and dried fruit go on for minutes. 100% semillon. A great sweet wine. Drinkable already but will age for ages. Better in three or four years but already gorgeous.

The 2022 Suduiraut is elegant, gracious and lifted, as the wines here typically are these days. Apricot, cinnamon, dried flowers, mint and orange peel all grace this wonderfully airy, understated Sauternes. Most importantly, the 2022 is a wine of exquisite balance. The 190 grams of residual sugar is quite a bit higher than the norm of 140-150, but that is not particularly evident. This has come together very nicely since I tasted it _en primeur_. While it might not reach the highs of the most exceptional years, it certainly comes close.

Gorgeous richness and juiciness, a compelling density and complexity, well constructed and poised. Refined but powerful, I love the intensity, really combines fruit fleshiness and unctuous acidity. Orange rind, but cool and fresh, not so much marmalade more honeyed oranges with lemon, lime, cinnamon, apricot, caramelised pineapple and touch of mango, but staying cool and bright with salty touches giving nuance. Well integrated, balanced - it has a lot of sugar at 194g but it really works! A yield of 7hl/ha. 3.45g total acidity. 4.0pH.

The 2022 Suduiraut comes from a quick and late harvest in October (three tries between 17 and 27 October with some passerillé grapes in September). Bunches were affected by botrytis but did not concentrate, at least not until a period of wind and warmth. Wild honey, quince and touches of marmalade on the nose, this opens nicely in the glass. The palate is pure and viscous in texture, with marmalade, again, and dried honey. Very open and approachable on the finish. Not profound, but quite delicious. Christian Seely said he drank this for breakfast the previous day - why not?

Pale medium colour. Classical apricot, necatrine, peach, lemon glacé aromas and flavours. Richly concentrated stonefruit flavours, attractive honey, marziapn notes, some al dente/ chalky textures and persistent minerally acidity. (Semillon 50% new oak). 94-95+

Amber in colour, with tropical fruits of passion fruit and mango on the opening beats, clear depth of flavour and contrast provided by orange peel and aniseed bitterness, low acidity. Luscious, silky, powerful, enjoyable. Pierre Montégut technical director, 7hl/h yields, 70% new barrels 30% from barrels of one vintage.

The 2022 Suduiraut, 100% Semillon with 190 g/l residual sugar, is pale to medium lemon-straw in color. The nose is not at all shy, bounding from the glass with exuberant notes of peach preserves, orange marmalade, lime blossoms, and candied ginger, giving way to suggestions of spice cake and honeycomb with a waft of toasted almonds. The big, rich, full-on decadent palate delivers profound stone and tropical fruit layers with compelling tension and texture, finishing very long and hedonically alluring.

One of the finest Sauternes I've been lucky enough to taste in some time, the 2022 Château Suduiraut is 100% Sémillon that hit 13.9% natural alcohol, with 190 grams per liter of residual sugar. Still resting in 70% new barrels, this monster of a Sauternes offers a huge nose of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade, spice, brioche, and almond paste. Full-bodied, rich, and massively concentrated, nevertheless, it somehow stays flawlessly balanced, fresh, and light on its feet.

The 2022 Suduiraut is laced with hints of tangerine peel, spice, vanillin, chamomile and dried flowers. It offers a lovely mix of botrytis-inflected flavors and textures while also showing quite a bit of freshness. The 2022 is done in the lighter style the château favors these days. My impression is that it is still coming together, as the wine shows a very slight lack of cohesion that is not typical. Drinking window : 2027-2047

The roasted nut profile and strong sense of botrytis is all over the place here. With another sniff and swirl, you discover roasted apricots, pineapples, tangerine, vanilla, and a plethora of spices all soaked in honey. Concentrated, fresh, spicy, chalky, and long, the orange, mango, and pineapple finish delivers its pleasures with racy assurance. The wine was made from 100% Semillon for only the third time in the history of the estate. Drink from 2025-2060.

Deep gold colour. Aromatically resplendent. Great purity as well. Honey, marmalade and tropical-fruit notes. Botrytis evident. Palate rich, luscious and intense. Sweet and packed with fruit, the bitter edge of the botrytis providing balance. Very long finish. (JL)

Wow. This is incredibly concentrated with such depth and power. Dried oranges. Full-bodied with some phenolic tension that frames the wine perfectly. Dried apricots and peaches. Incredible richness and freshness. Spicy and flavorful. Tastes more like a BA from Germany! 100% semillon.
