Siran - Margaux 2021

Château Siran, a remarkable Margaux wine

For 160 years, the history of Château Siran and that of the Miailhe family have been intertwined. Since 2007, Edouard Miailhe, 6th generation, presides over the destiny of the estate, situated in the Margaux appellation.

For the past 15 years, he has undertaken an in-depth replanting program in the vineyard and a modernisation of the technical facilities. Each of the 25 hectares that the vineyard comprises is cultivated like a garden: practices on each plot are adapted according to the terroir's requirements.

Alain and Brigitte Miailhe - Edouard's parents - were great art lovers and were known for the series of labels designed by renowned artists that delighted all Siran wine lovers for over 20 years (1980-2005). The family decided to revive this tradition starting from the 2020 vintage.

The 2021 Siran is a pretty, nuanced Margaux. Floral and citrus-driven aromatics are quite attractive, but I find the 2021 a bit lacking in the mid-palate.

Offering up aromas of cassis, redcurrant and plums, the 2021 Siran is medium-bodied, tart and ephemeral. It hasn't fulfilled the promise shown by the samples I tasted en primeur.

Cherry stones, currants, tobacco and lemon peel on the nose. Sleek and focused, elegant, with fine-grained tannins, a medium body and a creamy, linear finish. Try from 2024.

Slightly high-pitched, but has freshness and elegance, with a pretty stream of damson plum and red currant fruit flavors lined with subtle tobacco, black tea and alder hints. Shows a savory echo on the finish, which has the vintage's trim edge, but this is better than most of its peers. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 9,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.  –JM

One of the highlights of the 2021 vintage in Margaux. It is lighter framed than you will find Siran in recent years, but it has flavour and grip, and plenty of juice running through the palate. The fresh acidities of the vintage come across as textured slate minerality, and there are bright fruits on offer. Hubert de Bouard consultant. Harvest September 23 to October 9, with a generous 51hl/h yield. 35% new oak.

A layered and fine-tannined red with currants and light graphite and stone undertones, Medium body. Fresh, linear finish. Grows on the palate.

Medium-deep crimson. Wax polish, cassis, vanilla aromas with herb notes. Fresh cassis, redcurrant fruits, fine loose-knit chalky al dente textures and malt vanilla notes. Builds up brambly firm at the finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 11% petit verdot, 1% cabernet franc. 12 months in 35% new French oak. 13% alc

Violets, cherries and tobacco leaf show up with ease on the palate. The wine is soft, fresh, polished, silky, vibrant, elegant and spicy. The finish is loaded with peppery, red currants, a touch of espresso and spicy plums. Give it a year or two of aging, and enjoy it over the following 15 or more years. Interestingly, this is the first time in ages, if not in history that the blend was dominated by Cabernet. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. Drink from 2025-2040. 91-93

There is a large gap between the quality of the 2021 Siran and the Deuxième Vin because of the Merlot this year. Picked between September 23 and October 9, and matured in 35% new oak, the Siran has a delicate, perfumed bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry and light cassis scents. The palate is malleable, with fleshy red fruit that segues into darker fruit laced with graphite. Nicely balanced, albeit with less substance than the 2019 or 2020 (as you would expect), this Siran should drink well over the next 12–15 years. (13.0% alcohol)

Rubinrot.

The 2021 Siran unfurls in the glass with notes of blackberries, cassis, warm spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, supple and lively, with a pretty core of fruit and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the saline finish, it's a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot.
