Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) - Pomerol 2020

A real gem to discover, still off the radar, but not for long!

The Pradel de Lavaux family has been in the wine industry since 1740.

3 ha located in the heart of the village of Pomerol and its eponymous appellation, on the first terrace of the celebrated plateau. The estate’s vines are planted on terroirs of rare quality: four plots located close to the very top vineyards of Pomerol, Fleur Pétrus, Clinet, Trotanoy, Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan.

The wines of Château Saint-Pierre are imbued with a distinctive personality, a deft blend of power and finesse which combines the strengths of different terroirs.

From a three-hectare parcel between Petit Village and Vieux Château Certan, near the village church, comes the 2020 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol), a strong effort that offers up aromas of plums and blackberries mingled with orange rind and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with polished tannins and a gourmand but nicely balanced profile, aging vines and new plantings of Cabernet Franc are delivering impressive quality.

I was thrilled to see the 2020 Château Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) show so well as it comes from a terrific terroir and has been a touch erratic in the past (although it's always good). A blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc from vines near Vieux Château Certan and Le Pin, it has a beautiful perfume of darker cherries, currants, chocolate, earthy tobacco, and loamy soil. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Pomerol with fine, polished tannins, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a beautiful 2020 that readers will love. It should evolve for 15 years if well-stored.

The 2020 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) is a powerful, virile wine endowed with terrific depth and tons of character. Super-ripe dark plum, gravel, chocolate, incense and licorice meld together in this plush, explosive Pomerol. There's plenty of tannin, but very good balance as well.

The 2020 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) is a powerful, tannic Pomerol that is going to need at least a few years to soften. Even then, I imagine it will remain a brooding powerhouse. Black fruit, graphite, dried herbs, licorice and cloves add character to this decidedly somber personality. The 2020 is incredibly promising, especially if the searing tannins soften, even just a bit. I expect the 2020 will always be a virile wine.

Bright, sappy, plenty of personality, a few green tannins on the finish but this has energy and power. Same owners as La Renaissance.

Flowers, chocolate covered plums, espresso and licorice create the catchy nose. Darkly colored, lush, medium-bodied, polished and with a blast of chocolate-covered supple, dark red fruits, licorice and smoke in the finish. I am really liking this wine. This is the best vintage of Saint Pierre Pomerol yet. 90-92

87 % de merlot et 13 % de cabernet franc sont réunis dans un assemblage où l'aromatique florale marquée par la violette et le soyeux frais donnent le ton. Tannin à la fois énergique et voluptueux de belle profondeur. C’est très réussi.

A medium-bodied red with blackberry, black-cherry and some olive-skin character. It’s chewy and solid with outstanding tannin tension and a fresh finish.
