La Pointe - Pomerol 2020

The famous  “ Cocks & Féret” Bordeaux wine guide is considered a reference to this day. The 1868 edition positioned Château La Pointe alongside Beauregard, Clinet, La Conseillante, L’Evangile, Gazin, Nénin, Petit Village, Rouget and Trotanoy. To quote: “(after) great improvements in this vineyard (…) its wines, previously considered second growths, have been selling as first growths for almost the last ten years.”

At that time La Pointe already boasted 23 hectares, and thanks to its splendid Directoire-style mansion was one of the first in Pomerol to be allowed to use the name “Château”. This special status has always contributed to positioning the property among the most important of the appellation. Records show that the property received awards as early as 1882 with a silver medal at the Exhibition of Bordeaux, as well as at the Universal Exhibition of Amsterdam in 1883.

This estate has always produced quality wines, even if wine professionals consider that the “Beauty” was perhaps “Sleeping” for a while. Then in 2007 a change of ownership breathed a new energy into this historic domain, enabling it to express all the potential of its vineyard and re-establish its former prestige.

Tasting comment
The vintage 2020 is looking splendid. First we are impressed by the magnificent, intense purply hue, the deep ruby core and the brilliance that signals that perfect balance between ripe fruit and aromatic freshness. Then come the multiple aromas, with subtle, fresh notes of small wild berries, floral scents too, with peony and violet, and spicy notes of black pepper and sandalwood. The palate boasts an opulence and an elegance surpassing previous vintages at Château La Pointe. The smooth, pure taste, maintained by a fantastic tension, is a real treat for the senses. This balance is also the result of years of efforts to improve vine growing practices, bringing life back to the soils and energy to the vines. This 2020 will undoubtedly delight connoisseurs of great Pomerol wines.

A typical 2020 Pomerol, this is fleshy and forward, with crowd-pleasing plum and raspberry reduction notes lined with licorice and backed by warmed earth and sweet tobacco. This has just enough energy to carry it through the finish. A well-done wine. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2031. 5,833 cases made.

Lots of ripe red plums, chocolate, damp earth, and spicy, floral notes emerge from the 2020 Château La Pointe, a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, nicely concentrated Pomerol. With ripe tannins, a good sense of freshness, and terrific balance, it's going to offer plenty of pleasure over the coming 10-15 years.

Roses, violets, flowers and spicy kirsch notes pop in the perfume. As good as the nose is, on the palate, the wine is even better with its silky, sensuous approach. The perfectly ripe, plums and cherries offer a depth of flavor, opulent textures and a richness to the finish, along with freshness, that holds your attention making you want to take another sip. This is the best vintage of La Pointe I have ever tasted. Drink from 2024-2050.

The 2020 La Pointe is a rich, boisterous Pomerol to drink now and over the next handful of years. A blast of dark red fruit, cedar, tobacco, menthol, licorice and chocolate makes a strong opening impression. La Pointe is not terribly complex, but it more than makes up for that with its open-knit, exuberant personality.

The 2020 La Pointe has a well-defined, quite mineral-driven bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. Black cherries, raspberry and subtle violet scents, gaining intensity with aeration. The bottle opened at the château with Eric Monneret shows more graphite/pencil lead elements. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, linear in style, fresh with a vibrant saline finish. I appreciate the manner in which it fans out. Subtle but satisfying, this is a sophisticated Pomerol that adroitly expresses its sense of place.

The 2020 La Pointe is quite pretty and soft. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, mint and pipe tobacco all grace this Pomerol, which impresses with grace more than power. Silky tannins add to its immediacy. Not a big wine, but it sure is a charmer.

Impressive blue and black fruits as well as spice, flowers, and tobacco all emerge from this beautiful Pomerol. It has medium to full-bodied richness, solid mid-palate depth, and a wonderful sense of elegance paired with power. Give bottles 3-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15. Tasted twice.

The 2020 La Pointe has a finely tuned and detailed bouquet of black cherries, raspberry, wild strawberry and light truffle scents, unfolding beautifully with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and lovely poise, leading into a mineral-driven, sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Pointe I have encountered at this stage. Just superb.

Clarity and depth to the blueberry and raspberry fruit, they have done an excellent job of working with a hot dry vintage to still deliver this estate's trademark charm. Located on soils with plenty of gravel that needed careful attention, and yet this delivers a juicy, fresh core with finely shaped tannins and a moreish salinity on the finish. An excellent success. A higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than in the past, as was true also for the 2019 vintage and will be going forward. La Pointe makes wines that are often not sufficiently recognised within the starry appellation of Pomerol, and yet are consistently enjoyable and full of enticing charm. 3.63pH. A yield of 38hl/ha.

Lush, round, soft, silky and fresh, the wine is supple and sexy. There is a depth of flavor, opulent textures and a richness to the finish that holds your attention. This is a big step up in quality for La Pointe. The wine should age for 2 decades with ease. 92-94

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 La Pointe offers up notes of baked black and red plums, cherry preserves and fresh blackberries, plus wafts of crushed rocks, underbrush and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe black fruit flavors, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and earthy.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung.

Very aromatic with blackberries, dried flowers and wet earth. It’s medium-bodied with creamy, round tannins that are tight-grained. Fresh finish.
