Starting to show its full character at seven years old, this is definitely in sight of peak drinking, although going nowhere for another couple of decades. Sit back and enjoy the layers of blueberry and cassis primary fruits, now softening into campfire, leather and black truffle edging. This is so good, with a still muscular structure that is turning into a slow stretch of supple tannins. A signature Napa Cabernet. 75% new oak.

This vintage of the famous proprietary wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, a testament to how much the winemakers loved the variety on its own in this year. Root beer, cola and red plum notes make up its core of flavor, the texture velvety-soft. With its firm structure and clove accents, it will benefit from further time in bottle. Enjoy 2023–2033.

The red cherry–scented fruit of this 2013 has the darker purple notes of the vintage. At the moment of our tasting, the wine was dominated by the influence of its oak aging (in French oak barrels, 75 percent new). The site, a nook tucked into the Mayacamas hills, is prime Rutherford benchland, offering a wine with intensity of flavor, complete in its depths of sweet red fruit and supple, savory tannins. Cellar this to allow the wine to absorb its oak and reach a more nuanced expression.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon emerges from the back part of the property, which lies on the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. Here the wines are dense, powerful and structured. That is exactly what comes through in the 2013. Layers of dark fruit built into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures laced with mocha, espresso, gravel and dark spice overtones. The new oak that was so prominent at the outset has begun to integrate and in so doing is allowing the fruit to come through to a greater degree than in the past. This is a tremendous showing for the 2013 Rubicon

Dark black-red in colour, with brooding but alluring aromas (quiet black fruits framed with the scents of spice, of the forest, of cool earth).  On the palate, this is dry, vivid and elegant.  The fruit flavours are precise and almost zesty, hinting at currant, pomegranate and citrus rather than the exuberant plum or lush blackberry more typical of the Napa, while the tannins are refined, fine-grained and stealthy — not quite cashmere, but certainly suede.  Give it time to unfold.

The clarity and precision to this wine are phenomenal with blackcurrants, floral notes, blueberries, and orange peel. Complex and subtle with grace and stature. Full body, ultra-polished and refined tannins and bright acidity. The wine needs three to four years to open on the palate, but already it has a caressing quality to it.

Very fresh nose – terribly tempting to say it smells like young Ch Margaux! Aromatic and complex. Bone dry and appetising. Very racy. Extremely classy and dusty plus bordeaux plus beauty. Minerals aplenty and very fine tannins. More energy than the 2011 but with very similar tannins to the 2011.
