Inglenook, Rubicon - Napa Valley 2013

Rubicon, a world-class wine by Inglenook

Founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, Inglenook remains the crown jewel of the Napa Valley under the stewardship of the Coppola family. The property has been bought by Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970’s and the wine is made by Philippe Bascaules, General Director of Château Margaux.

The production of Rubicon, Inglenook’s premier red wine, began in 1978 and restored the estate’s legacy of making world-class wines. Rubicon is an elegant blend from the finest vineyard blocks and showcases the highest potential of both the estate and the vintage. Under the guidance of Philippe Bascaules, Inglenook’s Director of Winemaking, Rubicon proudly takes its place alongside much older, revered vintages of Inglenook in collectors’ cellars around the world.

Rubicon was named after the small river crossed by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C., declaring his intention to gain control of Rome, thereby launching a civil war among opposing factions. Over time the phrase "crossing the Rubicon" has come to signify any irreversible action with revolutionary intent or the outcome of which holds great risk. True to its uncommon depth, Inglenook's Rubicon continues to be a testament to the finely tuned rendering of a risk well-taken.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is dark, supple and super-expressive. It shows higher ripeness and a stronger oak imprint than the Cabernet Sauvignon. Even so, it has aged very well. Dark plum, espresso, licorice, sweet spice and a kiss of toasted French oak lend notable complexity throughout. In this tasting, ripeness and new oak feel accented, certainly more so than when this wine was younger.

Rock-solid, with a broad loamy base supporting layers of warmed cassis, plum reduction and blackberry preserves, while dark tobacco and singed alder fill in throughout. Weighty, but has polish through the finish, as the fruit and earth notes linger. Blind 2013 California Cabernet retrospective (February 2023). Drink now through 2036. 5,000 cases made.Rock-solid, with a broad loamy base supporting layers of warmed cassis, plum reduction and blackberry preserves, while dark tobacco and singed alder fill in throughout. Starting to show its full character at seven years old, this is definitely in sight of peak drinking, although going nowhere for another couple of decades. Sit back and enjoy the layers of blueberry and cassis primary fruits, now softening into campfire, leather and black truffle edging. This is so good, with a still muscular structure that is turning into a slow stretch of supple tannins. A signature Napa Cabernet. 75% new oak.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon emerges from the back part of the property, which lies on the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. Here the wines are dense, powerful and structured. That is exactly what comes through in the 2013. Layers of dark fruit built into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures laced with mocha, espresso, gravel and dark spice overtones. The new oak that was so prominent at the outset has begun to integrate and in so doing is allowing the fruit to come through to a greater degree than in the past. This is a tremendous showing for the 2013 Rubicon

The clarity and precision to this wine are phenomenal with blackcurrants, floral notes, blueberries, and orange peel. Complex and subtle with grace and stature. Full body, ultra-polished and refined tannins and bright acidity. The wine needs three to four years to open on the palate, but already it has a caressing quality to it.

Very fresh nose – terribly tempting to say it smells like young Ch Margaux! Aromatic and complex. Bone dry and appetising. Very racy. Extremely classy and dusty plus bordeaux plus beauty. Minerals aplenty and very fine tannins. More energy than the 2011 but with very similar tannins to the 2011.
