Rayne Vigneau - Sauternes 2023

Rayne Vigneau, a fresh and elegant wine

Rayne Vigneau's vineyard is perched on a majestic hilltop overlooking the Sauternes region, in the commune of Bommes. For centuries, generations have succeeded one another on this hill since Gaillard Sauvage founded the estate in the early 17th century. Among his notable successors, the Pontac family stands out, whose name is deeply intertwined with the emergence of the great Bordeaux wines. They acquired the estate in 1834. Under their stewardship, the Château was awarded the prestigious title of Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes in the celebrated 1855 Classification and was hailed as the 'Best Wine in the World' in 1867.

Now owned by the Trésor du Patrimoine group, Château Rayne Vigneau is currently managed by Vincent Labergère, with guidance from oenologist Henri Boyer. Rayne Vigneau remains one of the elite estates in the appellation, consistently producing wines of intense style, remarkable length, and refreshing vitality with each vintage.

The 2023 Rayne-Vigneau seems to have closed up since I tasted it from barrel, scents of yellow plum, honey and beeswax reluctantly opening with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a mellifluous opening, quite effervescent toward the finish with honey, orange zest and subtle ginger notes. Very fine. A second bottle was more expressive.

Aromas of honey, pineapple and mangoes with touches of beeswax and spices. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with sweet dried mangoes and tropical fruit. Sweet but not yet luscious, with a long finish. 82% semillon and 18% sauvignon blanc. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Château de Rayne Vigneau is healthy deep golden hue with a solid bouquet of caramelized pineapple, orange zest, and spicy wood. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Sauternes with a supple, nicely balanced mouthfeel, good acidity, and outstanding length.

Enjoyably concentrated and intense, highly spiced as are many of the Sauternes wines in this vintage due to small yields, which gives focus and a welcome edge of bitterness to the exuberant nectarine, pineapple and fresh fig flavours. Silky texture. Vincent Labagère director.

The 2023 Rayne Vigneau is a wild, exotic Sauternes. Pear, jasmine, tropical fruit and hints of white truffle are some of the many aromas and flavors that give the 2023 its complex, wonderfully dynamic personality. Understated, airy and nuanced, Rayne Vigneau is compelling in 2023.

The 2023 Château de Rayne-Vigneau has an intense nose that currently shows a bit of oak; that will be integrated with time. The palate is sorbet-fresh on the entry with tangy marmalade, peach and saffron notes. There is an undercurrent of stem ginger that lends a bit more complexity on the finish. Once the aromatics cohere, as I am sure they will, this will constitute a fine Sauternes. Give it four to five years once bottled.

Pale golden yellow, silver reflections. Fresh stone fruit, notes of yellow peach, a hint of orange zest, inviting bouquet. Juicy, deep but not opulent, white fruit, integrated sweetness, fine acidity, balanced and very persistent, a successful representative of the vintage.

There’s spice, botrytis, dried-apple and orange-peel character. Medium-bodied, sweet and refined. Not the richest example, but there’s purity to it.
