Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 1998

Rauzan-Ségla, an epitome of classicism.

The year 1661 marked the inception of Rauzan-Ségla, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the esteemed Gassies estate, laying the foundation for its storied legacy. With a keen vision, he went on to acquire the vineyard parcels that now constitute the heart of Rauzan-Ségla's vineyards. In 1994, when CHANEL acquired this Second Classified Growth, and later Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion in 1996, it ushered in a new era for the château. In 2017, CHANEL expanded its portfolio further by adding Château Berliquet, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Rauzan-Ségla's sprawling 70-hectare vineyards are home to all four Bordeaux grape varieties. They embrace the diverse geologies and soils found within the Margaux appellation, proudly showcasing this rich diversity. The layout of the Rauzan-Ségla vineyards resembles a captivating puzzle or mosaic, a seemingly fragmented landscape that paradoxically imparts its unique strength. Rauzan-Ségla wines derive their complexity from this intricate mosaic of soils and grape varieties. Crafting each vintage requires a delicate dance of adaptation, transformation, and composition, resulting in a wine that is distinctly specific to the year and terroir.

It's worth noting that the estate commenced its conversion to organic farming in 2021.

The 1998 Rauzan-Ségla is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot. Medium to deep garnet-brick colored, it has a lovely nose of baked plums, dried cranberries, mulberries and licorice with nuances of leather, baking spices and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate still maintains a surprising amount of fruit with fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with great length. While this is not a particularly complex Rauzan-Ségla, it is an outstanding example. It's unlikely to improve much, yet it is maturing slowly and should offer collectors a lot of joy over the next 15 years+. Drink 2020-2035.

The 1998 Rauzan-Ségla has slightly weedy in character, but also offers plenty of cedary spice, impressive sweetness of fruit, medium body, and a charming, balanced texture on the palate. Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, it’s a regal, rounded, fully mature old girl that has plenty of character. It’s not getting any better, yet I don’t see it falling off a cliff any time soon either. I’d line up bottles for drinking any time over the coming decade or so. Maturity 2019-2029.

The 1998 Rauzan-Ségla shows similarly to the bottle opened at the château during my 20-year on tastings a few weeks earlier. This was picked from 24 September until 8 October. It has an atypically brash and quite opulent bouquet, a touch more glycerin than I expected, perhaps the one vintage that doffs its cap to the New World. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine line of acidity, and quite structured. Impressive weight in the mouth, and tarry black fruit wash over the senses towards the bravura of a finish. It is a wine that wants to impress and that it certainly does in what was a modest growing season. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château.

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 1998 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) offers up notions of preserved plums, kirsch, cigar box and exotic spices with a hint of dried Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied with an impressive intensity of spicy blackberry preserves flavors, it is tautly structured with chewy tannins and a lively line of freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Great now but should hold a further 20 years. 2018 - 2038

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this classic, austerely-styled Medoc exhibits medium to full body, true breed as well as class, and excellent aromas of subtle herbs, cedar, cassis, and new wood. Rich, medium to full-bodied, sweet on the attack, and moderately tannic, it will benefit from 4-5 more years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018.

Very classy young wine. Black currant, mineral and cherry with hints of oak. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Long finish. Well done. Best after 2006. 8,330 cases made.

This wine is a paradox - impressively built, dense ruby/purple-colored, but ferociously tannic, and possibly out of balance when the tannin is measured against the wine's concentration and extract. It will require 8-10 years of cellaring, but I am not convinced there is enough harmony between its component parts to provide complex drinking. Time will tell. For now, I will give it the benefit of the doubt. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.
