Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2024

Château Quintus, a new icon on the Right Bank

Domaine Clarence Dillon purchased a superb Saint-Emilion estate in 2011, then a neighbouring property in 2013 and a third in 2021. These three exceptional vineyards now form a 45-hectare estate that produces one of Saint-Emilion's Grand Vin wines. The Gallo-Romans who planted the vineyards of Saint-Emilion used to name their fifth child Quintus (fifth). Domaine Clarence Dillon has therefore decided to pay tribute to its glorious ancestors by renaming the vineyard Château Quintus.

Perched on a limestone outcrop 62 metres above sea level, Château Quintus offers a majestic 360° view over the Dordogne valley. Its plateau overlooks an incredible wealth of microclimates and clay-limestone terroirs, ideal for the finest expressions of the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. Château Quintus's special natural feature is its Mediterranean belt, a veritable reservoir of biodiversity. Its two-hectare park, with its many hedges, majestic holm oaks, low walls and embankments, is immediately attractive.

The 2024 vintage

2024 was a challenging vintage that highlighted the importance of vine workers’ quick responsiveness and the means used to observe, analyse and take action with the greatest accuracy. This attentiveness at all times, made possible by the teams’ unfailing solidarity and skill, allows us to perceive great promise for this unique vintage.

Tasting notes

"A lovely deep, garnet red hue. The first nose is concentrated and gives a sensation of complexity. Swirling reveals superb aromas of ripe fruit and spices. Scents of blackberry and blueberry jelly are charming. As soon as the wine enters, it fills the mouth. On the palate, the wine develops, complete, well-balanced and in continuity right up to the long, refreshing finish.
This Quintus 2024 is proof that the terroir of this wine rose to the challenge in a year of challening weather conditions: the body and aromas are elegant. This is the hallmark of great wines."

Bright raspberry and cherry aromas. Sappy and lively, this has a real buzz and tang to the fruit, a little sour at first, then creamy and cool. It doesn’t have so much length or complexity but it’s well delivered. A little tangy and acidic really but this should put on some weight during ageing. Clarity and purity, lightly delivered. Lingering austerity in the bitter minerality. 30% of production. No new oak. 3.5pH.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Opens with cedary overtones before giving way to notes of kirsch, black raspberries, and red plums, plus suggestions of bay leaves and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate delivers chewy-textured, oak-laced flavors with a lively line and spicy finish.

Note : 92-94.

The 2024 Château Quintus brings solid black cherry and mulberry-like fruit as well as some sappy, green herbs, cumin, and crushed stone. It's medium-bodied and has a balanced profile, but it has some distinctly green aromatics and flavors that will need to be watched.

Good depth for this vintage, with lots of brightness. Medium-bodied with a good amount of fine tannins and lots of bright, juicy fruit. Dark cherries and a touch of fine spices. Fresh and friendly, with good texture and length. A classic vintage with lighter weight and very little perception of sweetness. 77.2% merlot and 22.8% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Quintus is streets ahead of the second and third wines on the nose, with pretty black cherry and blueberry fruit, a little Margaux-like in style thanks to the violet scent. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit mixed with blood orange and crushed stone towards the finish. Touches of cracked black pepper and cumin linger on the aftertaste. Very fine.

The 2024 Quintus is gracious, elegant and polished. Spice, tobacco, cedar and an exotic touch of blood orange give the 2024 lovely aromatic presence to match its mid-weight personality. There is a touch of new oak, but that should not be an issue with élevage. Here, too, the balance is very fine.

Black cherries, licorice, flowers, and plums are already quite expressive in the nose, and on the palate. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, soft-textured, and polished, the wine is all about its purity of fruit, refinement, lift, and energy which you see, from start to finish in its core of raspberries, strawberries, and cherries that linger. The wine blends 77.2% Merlot, with 22.8% Cabernet Franc. 13.1% ABV. The harvest took place September 24 - October 4. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2028-2042.

Representing only 21% of the estate's production, the 2024 Quintus is a blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc. Exhibiting notes of dark berries and toasty oak, it's medium-bodied, with more density, depth and tannin than its junior siblings, but it has a similarly bracing spine of acidity.

Tiny touch of reduction on the opening moments of this wine, then slowly uncurls, lovely rose petals, elderflower, raspbery and redcurrant, with a kiss of grilled sandalwood. You can really track the evolution of Quintus at this point, as it takes on more of the character of its location up on the limestone plateau, and this is a good quality wine. 35hl/h yield, 39% new oak. Unlike many Right Bank, this is the final blend. Mariette Veyssière technical director, working alongside Jean-Pierre Masclef.

Fragranced and lively aromatics - raspberry, blackcurrant leaf, blueberries and cola tones with floral scent too. Supple and friendly, this has a generous amount of clean raspberry and strawberry fruit with lively acidity but that doesn't overwhelm the expression. Calm and persistent with a creamy texture that gives an appealing mouthfeel. Mouthwatering acidity. It tapers a little in terms of density toward the finish but the flavour continues. Feels classic with a cool touch and restraint. Definitely not overdone here and this has great clarity. 40% of Grand Pontet going into the grand vin this year. 21% production. Ageing 39% new oak. 3.41pH - one of the lowest pHs. Usually 3.5-3.6pH.
