Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Quintus, a new icon on the Right Bank

Domaine Clarence Dillon purchased a superb Saint-Emilion estate in 2011, then a neighbouring property in 2013 and a third in 2021. These three exceptional vineyards now form a 45-hectare estate that produces one of Saint-Emilion's Grand Vin wines. The Gallo-Romans who planted the vineyards of Saint-Emilion used to name their fifth child Quintus (fifth). Domaine Clarence Dillon has therefore decided to pay tribute to its glorious ancestors by renaming the vineyard Château Quintus.

Perched on a limestone outcrop 62 metres above sea level, Château Quintus offers a majestic 360° view over the Dordogne valley. Its plateau overlooks an incredible wealth of microclimates and clay-limestone terroirs, ideal for the finest expressions of the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. Château Quintus's special natural feature is its Mediterranean belt, a veritable reservoir of biodiversity. Its two-hectare park, with its many hedges, majestic holm oaks, low walls and embankments, is immediately attractive.

Tasting notes

The wine shows a beautiful deep red colour. The first nose gives powerful aromas. Swirling then reveals the fine complexity of the delicately woody notes of red and black fruits: captivating. The first taste of this Quintus is rich and tight at the same time. The wines stays full of flavour and reveals that the precise tannic powerfulness makes way for an enchanting presence of savours.

The 2023 Quintus has an intense bouquet that errs toward Left Bank in style, well defined with blackberry, crushed stone and touches of citrus fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, well-judged acidity, fresh and saline with a very harmonious, silky-textured finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a lovely Saint-Émilion that should age gracefully.

A very subtle and focused young red with blackberry, plum and cherry aromas and hints of milk chocolate and hazelnuts. It’s full-bodied yet integrated and compact, with focus and purity. Sophisticated. A blend of 78.3% merlot and 21.7% cabernet franc. Better after 2028.

Black raspberries, spring flowers, graphite, and hints of celery seed all emerge from the 2023 Château Quintus, a medium-bodied, pure, graceful Saint-Emilion that has a touch (if not more than a touch) of green in its aromatics.

The 2023 Quintus is deep garnet-purple in color. It opens with notes of fresh crunchy black plums, wild blueberries, and cedar giving way to suggestions of wild sage, pencil shavings, and Sichuan pepper. The full-bodied palate has lovely tension and fine-grained tannins supporting the bright black fruit flavors, finishing on a minerally note. This is a very pretty Quintus, though slightly lacking in mid-palate, layers, and substance. The blend is 78.3% Merlot and 21.7% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.61 and 38% new oak.

Quintus (Saint Émilion; 78.3% Merlot; 21.7% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 43 hl/ha; pH 3.6; 15% alcohol). This feels quite serious. And it’s a big step up from the already impressive Dragon. Meaty and substantial, with a little tobacco smoke. Rose petals and parfumier’s essence of rose petals; Parma violets. Beeswax. A hint of sweet spicing, the oak as yet not fully integrated. Black cherry, damsons, blueberry, bramble. Mandarin and satsuma, too. Graphite. Black and green tea. On the palate this is sumptuous and opulent, with a lovely well-sustained chewy grape skin note on the finish. I love too the hint of limestone tannins on the crumbly, powdery finish – from the incorporation of the Grand Pontet plateau parcels I imagine.

Brambled fruit, richly textured, with juice that runs through the palate bringing you into the heart of St Emilion. Push and pull in texture between grilled smoky oak and slate-scraping pumice stone tannins, this takes its time to open, well judged and skilfully constructed. 43hl/h yield, 42ha in production since addition of Grand Pontet in 2021. Audrey Bernard joined the technical team in March 2021 direct from Opus One, plus new director Mariette Veyssiere.

The 2023 Quintus is a rich, racy Grand Vin. Ample and resonant, the 2023 offers up copious dark-toned fruit, cedar, mint, tobacco, incense and French oak. There's tons of power and breadth but also more freshness than the early vintages, even if the oak is a touch present today.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Delicately floral, black forest berries, ripe cherries, blackberries, candied orange zest, mineral touch. Juicy and complex, ripe cherries, round tannins, freshly structured, mineral and salty finish, shows good length, fine fruitiness in the aftertaste, certain ageing potential.

This year, the 2023 Quintus is a well-performing wine, possessing a dense, complex bouquet of smoke, dark wild berries and licorice intertwined with a delicate, oaky frame. Fleshy and ample, medium to full-bodied, it’s perfectly balanced with a delicate, lively core of fruit and a long, ethereal and chalky finish. The influence of the Grand Pontet limestone plateau lends additional straightness and precision to this wine, a blend of 78.3% Merlot and 21.7% Cabernet Franc.

The purity of the fruit here is so impressive, with raspberry, lead pencil, cedar and sandalwood. Medium to full body with very fine and intense tannins that run the length of the wine. Mineral. Tensioned. Beautifully integrated and sophisticated at the end. Lightly salty. 78.3% merlot and 21.7% cabernet franc.
