Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014

In June 2011, Domaine Clarence Dillon, acquired a beautiful estate in Saint-Emilion, today renamed Château Quintus. This wine is taking its natural place within the Domaine Clarence Dillon family, as an equal alongside the red and white wines of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, thereby becoming the 5th child in this illustrious family.
In October 2013, Château Quintus in turn acquired the neighbouring property, Château L’Arrosée, and these two exceptional estates are now united in order to produce one of the very finest wines of Saint-Emilion.

Merlot represents 66% of the surface in production and the rest, 26% is planted with Cabernet Franc and 8% with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Château Quintus also produces a second wine : Le Dragon de Quintus

While looking at the location of the estate, one knows that Quintus benefits from an outstanding terroir, on the top of one of the AOC hill, hillside and foot of the slope; as weel as its most prestigious neighbours such as Ausone, Pavie or Angélus.

In addition, this terroir has been producing wine since the early 14th century; while the former estates were called “Daugay” and “Larauzet”. In the last two centuries, the wines have always been among the best wines of Saint Emilion :

  • Part of « Premiers Crus (First Growths) of Saint-Emilion » in all Féret guides from 1850 to 1949… > Daugay and L’Arrosée were among the elite of Saint-Emilion wines
  • « At Daugay, Alezay sells his 1844 and 1846 wines for 500 francs… » « Daugay is one of the 14 Saint-Emilion wines most sought by wine brokers… » (H. Enjalbert, from the Lawton family archives) > This price is exactly the same as that of the wine produced by Mr. Cantenat, now Château Ausone….
  • « One can not imagine a more beautiful situation for an estate, or one more favourable for the production of a First Growth wine (…). » Dumas (F.-G) et Lallemand (Ch.), Les Grands Vins de Gironde, Paris, 1899

The 2014 Quintus is very youthful on the nose, with vibrant, almost Médoc-like scents of brambly red berry fruit, cedar, smoke and just a touch of pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fine tannins, again, very Left Bank in style with a gentle grip on the finish. This could actually benefit from a few more months in bottle. It's quite bold in style, but it pulls it off (just). Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

A good depth of fruit but the oak does sit in on the nose and palate, leaving a charry edge. It's round and sweet with the tannins finely etched and the Cabernet Franc adding freshness on the finish. The yield was low, at 25hl/ha. It could be an interesting bottle if the oak finely integrates.

The 2014 Quintus has a concentrated nose with pure red cherries, raspberry and cranberry scents laced with smoke and wet stone. This is fragrant and very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, almost Burgundian in terms of purity. The oak is beautifully disguised and it is blessed with a wonderful, caressing lace-like finish that belies the persistence that comes through. This Quintus appears to have really blossomed over the last year. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2014 Château Quintus is a small step back from the 2015. Dense purple/plum colored, with terrific notes of currants, cassis, new leather, and toasted spices, this beauty shines on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, seamless, sexy, and ready to go. It’s already hard to resist but will keep for 10-15 years.

Very perfumed and beautiful with violet and lavender aromas. Pretty ripe fruit. Subtle. Medium to full body, extremely silky tannins and a savory aftertaste. Linear and racy. Drink in 2020.

A pure, focused style, with a core of plum and cassis notes caressed by light floral and tobacco accents. Ends with a chalky thread through the refined finish. Best from 2018 through 2026. 1,500 cases made.

The 2014 Quintus has really come together nicely since I tasted it from barrel. Supple, pliant and wonderfully fleshy in the glass, this pretty wine possesses lovely richness and texture. Dark stone fruit, leather, spice and dried flowers infuse the creamy, expressive finish. The 2014 could be cellared for a few years to allow some of the youthful tannins to soften further, but it is quite expressive today. This is the first vintage of Quintus that incorporates fruit from both of the Dillon family's Saint-Émilion properties, formerly known as Tertre Daugay and L'Arrosée. The two adjacent sites are now being farmed as one. Among other things, this means fruit is harvested according to ripeness, rather than by estate. The blend is 69 % Merlot and 31 % Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times

The 2014 Quintus presents lovely dark red cherry, stone fruits, spices, leather and tobacco all in an attractive, mid-weight style. Round and silky through to the finish, the 2014 fleshes out quite nicely, suggesting it will drink well early. The blend is 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times.

A medium-bodied wine, which is fresh and spicy with a hot, cherry pie character and a fresh, elegant black raspberry finish. The wine was produced from a blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.45% alcohol. 90-91 Pts

The Château Quintus 2014 was picked between 29 September until 8 October and consists of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc. It represents 23% of the the total crop that of course, now includes L’Arrosée (three hectares that were unclassified now used for a 3rd label.) It has a candied bouquet, clearly with much more fruit concentration than the deuxième vin: hints of licorice developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, supple tannin, soft and plush in the mouth, a generous Quintus in the making, one with a crowd-pleasing aspect to it without compromising on quality.

A well composed Quintus from a challenging vintage on the Right Bank for Merlot - this is 69% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. While this vintage is not that concentrated nor intense, there is plenty of refreshing red and black fruit with spices that make this wine attractive and balanced. Enjoy it after 2018.

Lots of Cabernet Franc this year (31%) - mainly from former Tertre Daugay. Merlot from former l'Arrosée also included. Big step up from the second wine. Dark fruit and spice notes. Classical and linear in style. Tannins very fine and long. Best yet from this new (2011) creation. Drink: 2020-2030 (90+)

25% selection. 31% Cabernet Franc, 69% Merlot. Their fourth vintage and ‘our best ever’. Delmas admits they picked grapes 10 days too early in 2011. Spicy fruit and energy. Very polished tannins and lifted fruit. Pretty dry on the end. Bracing and spirited. A bit angular. Not that much depth or subtlety. But there is certainly polish!   14.5%Drink 2020-2030 (16.5+)

17/20 2023 – 2037

91–93. Barrel Sample. This wine is rich and soft, showing ripe blackberry fruits. The tannins are firmly buried in the rich fruit flavors, with bright acidity and ripe fruit tones dominate the palate.   — R.V.  (4/2/2015)

Offers bright cassis and violet notes, with a pleasantly firm, chalky spine holding the finish. Shows solid length, with a good briary feel at the very end lending addedrange and contrast. Easily the best vintage since the acquisition.
