Pavie Macquin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014

Château Pavie Macquin is named after the grandfather of the current owners: Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who Saint-Emilion has to thank for the use of grafted plants designed to save the vineyards devastated by phylloxera.

In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed as manager. Along with Stéphane Derenoncourt, they refine Pavie Macquin’s personality and have developed high-quality viticulture which has elevated the château to the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé wine in 2006, and once again in 2012. Recently, his son Cyrille Thienpont has begun to play an active role in Pavie Macquin's management.

The Pavie Macquin vineyard is characterized by its location on a plateau, next to Mondot hill and on the edge of the Fongaban fault. In one unique holding, it borders Troplong Mondot to the east and Château Pavie to the south, and overlooks Trottevieille to the north.

The 2014 Pavie-Macquin is more youthful than the Duffau Lagarrosse compared side-by-side, with heightened black cherry and cedar fruit and touches of camphor and pine. This has modest delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, modest depth, savory red fruit, orange rind and a touch of Moroccan spice. Perhaps a little more mature than expected, I would personally broach this over the next decade. It is one of the few Saint-Émilions that beckons you back for more. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Pavie-Macquin is superb. Deep, powerful and creamy, the 2014 possesses tremendous richness from start to finish. Today, the 2014 appears to be going through a period of transition, as the aromatics are not especially open, but a few more years in bottle should do the trick. I have always admired the 2014's balance, as I do once again today. The 2014 is a real dark horse and one of the real gems in this vertical.

The 2014 Pavie-Macquin has a fragrant bouquet with ebullient red berry fruit, rose petals and cedar all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine red berry fruit laced with cedar and lightly spiced, demonstrating superb intensity and elegance on the long finish. What a great Saint-Émilion this is turning out to be. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Coming from two parcels planted on the upper plateau, with a terroir like Troplong-Mondot, the 2014 Château Pavie Macquin is more backward than the 2015 (which is expected) and offers a masculine, firm, edgy style as well as lots of black cherry and currant fruits intermixed with smoked herbs, scorched earth and lots of minerality. This medium to full-bodied 2014 has good concentration, high, integrated acidity, and an age-worthy, classic style that needs 5-6 years of bottle age. It should have three decades of overall longevity. 92+

The purity and clarity to the nose of this wine are really exceptional with crushed berries, cherries and currants. Fruit and density are so impressive, yet this is so linear on the center palate, which gives it direction and focus. Fabulous. Better than 2009? Drink in 2022, but hard not to drink now.

The plum, boysenberry and raspberry fruit is very aromatic, carrying a glossy sheen as this glides along, picking up subtle anise, alder and tobacco notes slowly but steadily through the finish. A graphite edge is buried deep. This should age gracefully thanks to the purity and balance. Best from 2022 through 2032. 4,250 cases made.

The 2014 Pavie Macquin is just as sensual from bottle as it was from barrel. Silky, gracious and expressive, the 2014 has it all. Black cherry, plum, smoke, mocha and a host of dark-toned flavors all blossom in the glass. The 2014 offers a striking combination of power and finesse, with plenty of power to burn. This is another unqualified success from estate manager Nicolas Thienpont and winemaker David Suire. The blend is 85 % Merlot, 14 % Cabernet Franc and 1 % Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2014 Pavie Macquin is superb. Black cherries, smoke, new leather, cloves and cedar blossom in the glass as this textured, voluptuous St.-Emilion shows its dark, enticing personality. The flavors are distinctly sepia-toned in a muscular, powerful Pavie Macquin that will drink well for several decades. Savory herbs, crushed flowers, mint and smoke blossom on the dense, explosive finish. The blend is 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Floral, black raspberry and licorice notes open as soon as the liquid hits the glass. The wine feels soft, smooth and supple and there is tension and polish in the finish that tastes as good as it feels. 93-94 Pts

The Château Pavie-Macquin 2014 is a blend of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped between 6 and 14 October at 36 hectoliters per hectare. The nose is actually a distant cousin of Château Canon '14: very pure and delineated, quite sensual thanks to the embroidered 60% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a touch of white pepper lending a little spiciness. There is pleasing density on the finish, if not quite the complexity of either Canon or say, Château Pavie. I actually improves in the glass, gaining more composure and nuance, the aftertaste lengthening thanks to its saltiness. This is a fine Pavie-Macquin that should offer 10 to 15 years of pleasure, possibly more and I expect it will land at the top of my banded score.

Vibrant plum and cassis with firm tannins on the palate. Well made, balanced Saint-Emilion that will bring near-term drinking pleasure. Even at this young stage, the wine has balance and sweet, attractive dark fruit flavors.

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet. Restrained and undemonstrative but less power and more refinement this year. Fresh and minerally with a clean persistent finish. A Pavie-Macquin with a feminine edge. Drink: 2022-2035 (91)

Dark crimson. Heady graphite notes on the nose. Very opulent and ripe though still fresh. Just on the cusp of being too sweet, this should please many drinkers looking for successful modern-style St-Émilion. Slightly grainy drying tannins on the end.  Drink 2023-2032 (16.5+)

85 % Merlot, 14 % CabernetFranc, 1 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 17/20 2024 – 2040

93–95. Barrel Sample. The tannins cut firmly into the fruit of this impressive wine. They give a dense, dry edge to the ripe berries and fresh acidity. The effect is a juicy wine that has a tough edge. This will take time to develop.  — R.V.  (4/2/2015)

Well-packed, with ample boysenberry, blackberry and raspberry flavors that course along, carried by anise and singed apple wood notes that stay reserved through the finish. Squarely fruit-driven, but exhibits great purity and energy.
