Quintessa - Napa Valley 2020
Quintessa, a "Cru" in the heart of Napa Valley
Nestled in the heart of Rutherford, Quintessa is a 280-acre site that reflects a diversity of geology, biodiversity, exposures and microclimates. Captivated by this extraordinary setting, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed that it was destined to become one of the world’s great wine estates.
At Quintessa, the harmony of the place is remarkable. People, vines, wildlife, plants, forests, and lakes all contribute to a natural ecosystem that the team is dedicated to preserving. The estate spread over 160 acres planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère, across 26 distinct vineyard blocks. Each block possesses its own unique character, and the team is dedicated to fully expressing the essence of each one. To achieve this, they have collaborated with experts in geology, terroir, biodiversity, and climate to intimately understand their terroir. Each parcel is farmed organically and biodynamically and vinified individually to preserve and enhance their nuances.

Weather conditions
The 2020 season at Quintessa began early with budbreak in late March as the vines responded to a dry winter, followed by a warm spring. Full canopy growth rapidly set the stage for a vintage of small berries with high tannin potential. Summer delivered a relatively mild June as the vines transitioned to sugar accumulation and then into flavor ripening in the third week of August. Aroma and taste evolved rapidly.
Tasting notes
The 2020 Quintessa enters on a core of cassis, black cherry, and currants enveloped by clove spice and savory dried herbs. Layers of structured tannin and the distinct mineral imprint of the Quintessa terroir give way to a structured and polished finish. Balanced and with well-integrated movement, this elegant and complex wine has plenty of ife ahead of it – drinking well now and with cellar potential or at least 20 years.
