Prieuré-Lichine - Margaux 2024

Prieuré-Lichine, a historic estate in Margaux

The wines of Château Prieuré-Lichine have a true "Margaux" identity, combining elegance and refinement. Every day, the team shares its wine “art de vivre” with visitors from all over the world.

After a half a century of close ties with the Lichine family, Château Prieuré-Lichine was acquired by the Ballande group. Under the new owners, the estate set its sights firmly on the new millennium, continuing its path forward, and ever faithful to its long tradition of hospitality.

The 2024 vintage: Resilience, tenacity and involvement

The 2024 vintage, the result of remarkably meticulous work, has faced unprecedented climatic conditions. The year was marked by exceptional rainfall, putting men and vineyards to a severe challenge. Thanks to the expertise, tenacity and resilience of our teams, we were able to draw new energy from this adversity, helping to preserve the vines and produce a wine of great purity.

Tasting notes

Clean and clear, nice purity to the cool and creamy blue fruit with soft spice and floral edges. Touches of cedar, cinnamon and tobacco on the finish with a liquorice saltiness. A little serious right now - with lots of tannic grip - but well made with clarity and focus. Not a massive amount of push and turns a little dry towards the finish but this definitely doesn't feel overworked. Just a little light. Tasted twice.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Opens with notes of juicy black plums and red currant jelly, leading to touches of fallen leaves, bay leaves, and graphite. The light to medium-bodied palate is chewy and refreshing with just enough savory-laced fruit and a firm finish.

Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot, brought up in 35% new oak and the balance in once-used barrels, the 2024 Château Prieure-Lichine reveals ripe black cherries, graphite, spicy wood, and tobacco notes. Medium-bodied and focused on the palate, it has an elegant mouthfeel, ripe, present tannins, and solid depth.

Fresh and nicely herbal on the nose, showing dark cherries, violets and some currants. Crunchy and tight-grained with medium body and a linear finish. Tannins are chewy but not overpowering.

The 2024 Prieuré-Lichine offers violet-infused black fruit on the nose. It is simple and lacks a bit of bandwidth but remains clean. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, a bit hard on the mid-palate, with a peppery finish. This is just missing a bit of elegance and complexity, but it should provide 10 to 12 years of drinking pleasure.

The 2024 Prieuré-Lichine is an attractive wine, but it does show the lighter side of the year, accented by the fact that Prieuré-Lichine is never a big wine. Dark red/black fruit, mocha, licorice and spice all meld together in the glass, with good mid-palate pliancy and promising balance. Tasted two times.

Flowers, licorice, smoke, black, with red currants, and plums come through in the aromatics. The medium-palate is soft, round, and subtle, with elegant, ripe, black cherries displaying an almost creamy edge to the texture which carries through to the fresh finish. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2028-2042.

Château Prieuré-Lichine is a subtly complex Margaux that captivates not with overpowering aromas but through its refined, chalky texture. The 2023 vintage exemplifies this approach very well. It maintains clear aromas and a soft palate while displaying impressive concentration. Its delicate tannins and a slightly salty finish lend an exquisite elegance, creating a serene, white canvas across the taste buds. (Winemaker Etienne noted that the extraction process was quite gentle in 2023, spanning only 21-24 days.)

An intriguing wine that has me rather in two minds. I love the initially shy but increasingly expressive Cabernet-dominated aromatics that seem to suit very well the identity of Prieuré-Lichine; and I love, too, the delicate violet and rose petal florality here. And there’s a hint too of the graphite that will come through more with élévage and bottle aging. This is creamy, too, on the attack and the tannins have been beautifully managed. But in the mid-palate I find this both a little lean and, perhaps more significantly, lacking in complexity – it seems to lose the identity established aromatically. It’s almost a little dilute. That said, you can only work with what you harvest and I suspect the choices made here are the right ones. Early drinking and highly accessible, it will be interesting to see whether it grows in volume a little during its (presumably quite short) élévage.

Smartly constructed, with a slow unrolling of the blackberry fruits, sweet raspberry and strawberry puree, sage and white pepper spice, a touch of leafiness through the mid palate but fragrant and charming. Harvest 26 September to 9 October. 35% new oak. Upscore potential in bottle.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Delicate notes of ripe plums, a hint of nougat and plums, candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, ripe cherries, fresh acidity, a hint of chocolate on the finish, good length, definite ageing potential.
