Poujeaux - Moulis 2023

Poujeaux, the signature of the Cuvelier family

As the owners of Château Poujeaux, located in Moulis en Médoc appellation, for the last 15 years, the Cuvelier family have consistently sought to improve and enhance their Médoc estate. With a highly committed team, their philosophy is to preserve the values of family, people and high standards of quality, while seeking to bring out in the wines the terroir and all its complexity. Château Poujeaux is a dense, silky, complex and subtle wine, which faithfully expresses its terroir in each and every vintage.

The Cuvelier family also owns Clos Fourtet (Saint-Emilion 1st Grand Cru Classé B) and Château Côte de Baleau (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru).

The 2023 Vintage

2023 is a return to the classic balance of the great vintages. The year’s weather conditions enhanced terroir expression in the wine, which shows excellent concentration and lovely freshness. The Merlot is harmoniously balanced, while the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon bring intense flavour, depth and elegance. All blending harmoniously, combining complexity with subtlety.

Tasting notes

COLOR A deep garnet hue with bright violet glints.
NOSE An intense nose of blackcurrant, violets, gun-flint and cigar-box.
PALATE A fresh, full, supple attack. Fine, silky, coated tannins then come through in a lovely mineral balance with lingering black fruit flavours

The 2023 Poujeaux has a refined and delineated bouquet that unfolds nicely in the glass; blackberry and gravel, light black pepper scents with a touch of freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins. Well balanced with neatly integrated oak, this is a Poujeaux that should develop in bottle. Good density for the vintage.

Plenty of nutmeg, cedar, black currant and mushroom aromas. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a savory finish of milk chocolate. A little austere, but just right. Good value. Drink or hold.

This château that was hit by hail in July. The 2023 Château Poujeaux is based on close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a splash of Petit Verdot. Ripe redcurrants, cassis, leafy herbs, and some floral, graphite notes all emerge from the glass, and this medium-bodied Moulis has good overall density and depth, ripe tannins, and a solid finish. This elegant, pretty 2023 will shine right out of the gate. Tasted three times with consistent notes.

Licorice, black currants, mint, tobacco, and cedar, with flowers open the perfume. On the palate, the wine is fresh, and filled with chewy black, with red currant, anise, spice, and flowers. There is a vibrancy that lingers on the palate, and in the finish that give the wine a real upbeat nuance. The wine blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, 12.5% ABV, 3.8 pH. Drink from 2028-2042. 91-93 Pts.

Always an estate that works hard and is often a good bet across a variety of vintage conditions. It works again in 2023, prety austere right now, layers of tannic architecture along with signature mint leaf and cigar box. No question this will age, don't rush it, needs time to unwind, feels like an impressive Left Bank claret full of classic character, and confident tannic architecture. High propotion of Petit Verdot, 33% new oak for ageing, 38hl/ha yields, after hail on a small prt of the vineyard.

The 2023 Poujeaux is plump, juicy and super-inviting right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, sweet spice and floral accents caress the palate, all framed by supple, silky tannins. There's a bit more Petit Verdot in the blend this year, and that comes through in the wine's dark flavor profile and structural feel. This is a fine vintage for Poujeaux. Tasted four times.

The 2023 Poujeaux was picked from September 18 to October 4 andmatured in 30% new oak. The first couple of samples tasted didn't quite engage as much as a third bottle on the penultimate day's tasting, which seems more representative. This Moulis, owned by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet) has a tempting nose with blackberry, wild strawberry, incense and crushed violet scents—well defined and focused, blossoming nicely in the glass. There's good energy and vibrancy. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit. Perhaps just a little gritty in terms of texture, there is a bit of rigidity apropos the tannins on the finish. Hopefully, it will gain more elegance once in bottle, but it feels as if it will meld together during élevage.

Dark ruby, purple reflections. Dark nougat, some cassis, blackberries, ripe plums, inviting bouquet. Medium body, ripe cherries, integrated tannins, subtle fruit in the finish, a versatile food wine.

The 2023 Poujeaux offers up youthfully reserved aromas of licorice, dark wild berries and smoke. Medium-bodied, firm and slightly austere, it’s elegant and gently structured with powdery tannins and a long, somber finish. A second encounter revealed greater flesh and plentitude. It's a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon (a higher proportion than usual), 35% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.

The tight tannins and pretty fruit are very attractive now, with medium body and a juicy finish. I like it.
