Maucaillou - Moulis 2023

The terroirs that make up the 90 hectares of Château MAUCAILLOU, are composed of superb outcrops of quaternary alluvial deposits, largely from the layer of Guntz gravel from the Garonne which is at the origin of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.

It is this gravel, whose gleaming surface reflects the sun’s rays up on to the bunches, that enables the grapes to reach full maturity, which is an essential condition for producing great wine.

According to Philippe Dourthe, owned of Château Maucaillou, the philosophy of estate can be resumed as:

"Grand Cru Classé, cannot,
Cru Bourgeois, deigns not,
Château MAUCAILLOU, is."

The 2023 Maucaillou has a light bouquet with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and light tea-leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, fine acidity, but it lacks real complexity on the dry finish. Weirdly, I prefer the second label!

Tobacco, dried flowers, elderberries and cigar box. The medium- to full-bodied palate is saline and long, very elegant and precise, with a chiseled structure and evenly distributed fruit. Well-composed. A blend of 52% cabernet sauvignon, 41% merlot and 7% petit verdot. Approachable now but will also evolve. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Maucaillou has more freshness and refinement on the nose than the 2022 had at this stage last year (apparently the winemaking modus operandi has changed). The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Indeed, a couple of samples toward the end of my tastings accentuated that dryness and left the finish a bit hard. Hopefully, it will gain some flesh.

Pretty red fruits, incense, spice, and floral notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Maucaillou, a charming, forward, delicious Moulis that has terrific balance and good length. It's a charmer to drink over the coming 7-8 years or thereabout.

Flowers, cherries, licorice, currants, and tobacco come together in this round, soft, easy-to-like wine, with its creamy, soft-textured, chocolate-accented, cherry-filled finish. Drink from 2026-2036. 89-91 Pts.

Enticing ruby violet reflections, this has a bright feel, has the smoky sweet oak of Moulis giving appellation typicity. A little sharp in its acidity but with lift and a ton of raspberry and black cherry fruits.

The 2023 Maucaillou is a pretty powerful wine. Bruising tannins dominate the balance today, but the red-toned fruit is also dried out. It will be interesting to see how this shows in bottle.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Delicate notes of cassis, dark cherries, fine herbal savouriness, candied orange zest, a hint of nougat. Juicy, fresh cherries, subtle tannins, round and harmonious, good freshness, already accessible.

Home to some of the finest terroirs in the Moulis appellation, this estate has experienced a welcome style change over the past few years. The 2023 Maucaillou offers notes of smoke, dark wild berries, spices, and menthol. The wine on the palate is medium-bodied, round and elegant with an enveloping texture, structured tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

Medium-bodied with juicy fruit and fine, silky tannins. It’s polished and sleek. A little watery on the finish, though.
