Poujeaux - Moulis 2021

The philosophy of the Cuvelier family

As the owners of Château Poujeaux, located in Moulis en Médoc appellation, for the last 14 years, the Cuvelier family have consistently sought to improve and enhance their Médoc estate. With a highly committed team, their philosophy is to preserve the values of family, people and high standards of quality, while seeking to bring out in the wines the terroir and all its complexity.
The harmony found in the wines of Château Poujeaux is underpinned by
a balanced grape composition in the vineyard, vinification of uncrushed
berries, ageing in barrels, which together produce a wine that is dense,
silky, complex and subtle, which faithfully expresses its terroir in each and
every vintage.

2021, a technical and demanding vintage

2021 was a vintage that once again required high technical skill and wine-growing standards. The weather conditions throughout the growing season as a whole preserved the high quality potential in the fine plots, as well as the gentleness and finesse of the vintage. The blend is harmonious: the Petit Verdot merges well with the Cabernet-Sauvignon, which structures the tender, delicate Merlot.

Tasting notes

A deep garnet hue with brilliant bright purple glints.
Intensely aromatic with notes of violets, blackcurrant, flint and cigar-box.
The entry is harmonious and velvety smooth. Silky tannins. Great minerality and beautiful finesse and elegance.

The 2021 Poujeaux is a bit hard to taste today, as it is rather closed at this stage—perhaps a result of its bottling a few months ago. Dark-toned fruit, herbs, gravel, graphite and spice lend notable character. Today, the savoriness of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are pretty evident.

The 2021 Poujeaux offers up attractive aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety palate built around lively acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish. This is a strong effort that will reward at least a few years' bottle age. 89+

Pretty spice, dried mushroom, lavender, violet and subtle currant aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and delicious freshness. Nicely done for the vintage. Drinkable now but can improve for three to six years.

Shows cassis and bitter plum notes laced with cedar and earth hints, turning a touch trim on the finish and revealing a nice smoky hint throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. 20,000 cases made.  –JM

This is a successful wine and one that perhaps does not contain oodles of flair, but its heart is in the right place. With a few minty details that break up the blackberry theme, adding freshness and bounce, this wine steps back from too much oak or alcohol, and the restraint is what makes it so well-judged. 16.5

A fresh and focused 2021 with fine tannins that are pretty in the center-palate. Medium body, firm tannins and a racy finish. Pretty wine.

The 2021 Château Poujeaux comes a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot representing 70% of the production. It offers a solid array of ripe red and black fruits as well as tobacco leaf and cedar notes. These carry to a medium-bodied, round, charming, forward wine with lots of character. The Moulis region did reasonably well with regard to the frost in 2021, but they were still hit by it, so this cuvée represents 70% of the total production.

Beau nez complexe sur les fruits rouges, excellent corps, texture raffinée, naturel dans l’expression d’un encépagement médocain classique qui lui permet d’associer précision et charme. Nous le retrouvons comme nous l’aimons. L’année lui a réussi.

Deep crimson. Graphite, dark fruits, roasted chestnut, cedary, waxy aromas. Supple palate with abundant dark berry, cedar flavours, fine loose-knit/ al dente tannins and bittersweet chinotto notes. Finishes oaky firm with mineral/ graphite flavours. 12 months in around 30% new French oak. 13% alc

Poujeaux is softened in 2021. It performs well in both the extraction and the fruit selection. In general, the changes in flavors and layers of taste are relatively gentle. Though it does not present the "wow" effect like its former vintages, it boasts a round palate and finely polished tannins. 2021???Poujeaux???????,??????????????????????????????????????????????????????,????????????,????????????

Medium-bodied, soft, silky, fresh, sweet and polished with a refined edge to the currants, tobacco leaf and savory herbs on the mid-palate and in the finis. You can enjoy this with pleasure on release for all of its fruit and freshness. The wine blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, 13% ABV. Drink from 2023-2037. 89-91

The 2021 Poujeaux was impacted by the frost, so there is more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year. This was picked September 30 to October 14. It is well-defined on the nose, offering brambly red berry fruit, incense and light pine cone scents; the sense of airiness here is very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and saline, with firm but fine tannins and touch of sour cherry and graphite on the precise finish. This is a very commendable Poujeaux that I suspect will age well in bottle. (13.0% alcohol)

Rubinrot. Belle allonge.

The 2021 Poujeaux is a strong effort, opening in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with notions of pencil shavings, violets and loamy soil. Medium-bodied, elegant and seamless, it's a pretty middleweight, framed by lively acids and powdery, melting tannins.

Concentrated blackcurrant nose. Ripe and juicy, this feels softly plump with a plush mouthfeel and satisfying weight to the tannic structure. It has elements of cool blue fruits, liquorice and clove that give a spiced hit on the tongue and a bitter dark chocolate and green peppercorn finish that gives it the slightest bit of rusticity still. A nice expression, unfussy and super easy to like. Shows good promise. Will be interesting to taste in bottle. Tasted twice. 3.75pH. A yield of 40hL/ha.
