Phélan Ségur - Saint-Estèphe 2021

Château Phélan Ségur, the taste of its terroir

In the heart of the village of Saint-Estèphe, Château Phélan Ségur enjoys a privileged location overlooking the Gironde, on superb, gently sloping clay gravel ridges. While the Château may be of Irish origin through its founder Bernard O’Phelan, today it belongs to Philippe Van de Vyvere, a Belgian captain of industry and connoisseur of fine Bordeaux wines.

The property’s 114 hectares overlook the Gironde Estuary and enjoy natural biodiversity. Phélan Ségur is a landscape of meadows, hedges, low walls, woods and forests, streams and orchards sheltering hundreds of animal and plant species. They all contribute to the life of this 70-hectare "vine garden".

Since 2010, Véronique Dausse has managed this jewel of Saint-Estèphe with demanding high standards and pragmatism. Together with Philippe Van de Vyvere, they set themselves ambitious goals and aspire to excellence. They are committed to preserving know-how, ensuring the wellbeing of the teams, and sustainability, while respecting the soul of the property.

The first wine of Château Phélan Ségur, characterized by its elegance and finesse, has experienced an important progression in recent years and reveals all the beauty that the Saint-Etienne terroir has to offer.

2021 vintage, timeless

Véronique Dausse tells you about this vintage: https://bit.ly/PhélanSégur2021

"2021 is the style of wine that drives my passion for Phélan Ségur: purity, precision, density, ripeness, quality of tannins and, finally, distinction. A Phélan Ségur of today and tomorrow... timeless." Philippe Van de Vyvere

The 2021 vintage has a ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose fascinates, with its intensity and complexity. Notes of juicy red fruits, spices and the heady fragrance of old roses, alternating endlessly.
Perfectly timed on the palate, dazzling and with great refinement. The density and concentration are there. The tension, taste and delicacy of the tannins are the mark of Phélan Ségur in its most timeless style.

The 2021 Phélan Ségur turned out beautifully. Dark, somber notes typical of this Saint-Estèphe are present, but also attenuated by the medium-bodied structure of the year. Red cherry, gravel, incense, licorice and dried herbs fill out the layers nicely. The 2021 is a quiet Phélan Ségur, yet all the elements are nicely balanced.

Very refined with a mineral and chili chocolate twist to the fine spices and cassis with a touch of iron and pencil shavings. The juicy, medium- to full-bodied palate shows symmetry of chalky tannins and fruit concentration. More refined, layered and long than it is compact or broad. Still, the finesse and minerality are evident. Drink now or hold.

Shows gently mulled loganberry and black currant fruit flavors that have some breadth, atypical for the vintage, while a mix of black tea, potpourri and singed cedar notes fill in the background. Reveals a pretty accent of warm earth on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 10,000 cases made.  –JM

Plenty of cabernet character with currant and blackberry and some fresh-herb undertones. Medium body. Fine, firm tannins. Refined and together. Oyster shell and hints of spices such as cloves and white pepper. Tapenade. Typical for the appellation. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot and 21% merlot.

Tasted on numerous occasions, the 2021 Château Phélan Ségur (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot) makes the most of this challenging vintage and offers terrific purity in its cassis fruit as well toasted spice and violet notes. It has some background oak, medium-bodied richness, good mid-palate density, and outstanding length. 91-93+

De la noblesse liée à ses 75 % de cabernet-sauvignon, le plus important pourcentage de l’histoire récente. Parfaite vinification. Son équilibre précis et savoureux gagnera beaucoup dans les dix ans à venir.

In a less-than-optimal vintage, Phélan Ségur still manages to present us with top-notch ripeness and a vibrant Saint-Estèphe. Aromas of sweet blueberry and mulberry are followed by the long, lingering violet bouquet. It flows smoothly and effortlessly on the palate, giving one the ethereal sensory set off by crisp acidity. Dense, powdery tannins spread across the whole palate, integrated with the rounded body in creating a long, lingering finish. Definitely one of the excellent works among Saint-Estèphe 2021. ??????????,?Phélan Ségur????????????????,?????????Saint-Estèphe?????????????????????????????????,???????????????????????????????,?????????,???????????????????Saint-Estèphe 2021????????

Smoke, dark chocolate, flowers and espresso tinged black cherry notes are in the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, forward, soft, round and fruity, with cocoa overtones to accompany the black cherry and espresso oriented finish. This should be quite enjoyable on release. The wine blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. This interesting blend represents the highest percentage of Cabernet ever placed into Phelan Segur. They have been a non-stop roll here and the 2021 continues that streak! Drink from 2023-2037. 92-94

The 2021 Phélan Ségur has an attractive bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and dried rose petal scents, quite fragrant and appealing even at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine tannins, well-judged acidity and quite a tensile finish. This is very promising, though it will need four to five years in bottle. It might represent one of the best values for money… depending on the release price, of course.

The 2021 Phélan Ségur is bright, punchy and full of character, with all the youthful vigor and fruitiness of a barrel sample. I very much like the energy here. There's less density than in the preceding years, but that is not a bad thing at all. Cedar, tobacco, sage and bright red berry fruit open nicely, all woven together by the aromatic intensity that is such a signature of the year. This is the second vintage that incorporates a touch of Petit Verdot, while the Cabernet is the highest it has ever been here. Readers will find a classy Phélan marked by a sense of strict classicism that is hugely attractive. Tasted four times.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with notions of rose petals, pipe tobacco, sweet spices and loamy soil, the 2021 Phélan Ségur is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with impressive depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. Concentrated and well-constructed, this is a serious wine with a bright future ahead of it. It's a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Tasted five times, twice at the estate. (92 - 93)+
