Petit Smith Haut Lafitte rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2023

Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a cru that lives in symbiosis with Nature

In 1990, Florence and Daniel Cathiard fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte. They purchased it with the firm intention of perpetuating the tradition of excellence of this noble wine. "Our philosophy can be summed up in one sentence: to do everything to ensure that each vintage, whether red or white, reflects our magnificent terroir." Here, everything is done to preserve a living and harmonious ecosystem. The 80-hectare vineyard obtained the 'Organic Farming' label in 2019.

Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the second wines produced at the estate. Its aromatic profile possesses similar characteristics to those of the grand vin.

The 2023 vintage: the vintage of the future and the memory

The year 2023, a symbol of the future and the preservation of memories, stands out for several significant reasons. Firstly, it is during this year that the Château Smith Haut Lafitte wine blend gains in robustness thanks to an increased proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, the flagship grape variety of the Left Bank. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the basis of the Smith Haut Lafitte grands crus, renowned for their ability to withstand the effects of global warming.

This year was also notable for the visit of His Majesty King Charles III, accompanied by Queen Camilla, who chose the estate's château to discover the production methods used during the grape harvest. Their interest in biodiversity and organic farming was an opportunity for the estate to share its values and commitments. This unique and enriching experience will be remembered as a highlight of 2023 for Smith Haut Lafitte.

Tasting notes:

"A preview of the Grand Vin: clarity and purity, lively fruits, silky tannins, incredible freshness, precision, juicy finish. A captivating, highly seductive wine. It offers good tension and a fine structure, showcasing the quality of this year's Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark and intense color, with an aromatic and slightly smoky nose, meticulous and silky mouthfeel, with well-integrated tannins. It boasts a delightful and aromatic length." Fabien Teitgen, Winemaker

The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte has a higher-toned, more vibrant bouquet than the Les Hauts de Smith: black cherries mixed with iodine and potpourri scents. The oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, cohesive and very Pessac in style with a touch of flint and brine. Maybe there is not the persistence of the previous finish, but still a lovely wine that might mature better in bottle than you might presuppose.

Very good intensity here, with fine toast giving a spicy character to the lemon peel, lemon curd and pastry. Almost full-bodied. Tightly wound in the finish. A blend of 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon. Drink from 2026.

More Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. It has another level of elegance, with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, graphite, chocolate, and scorched earth. It offers beautifully balanced, ripe, polished tannins and a great finish.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2023 is aging in 30% new oak. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it rolls out of the glass with ready-to-go scents of crème de cassis, preserved plums, and redcurrant jelly, followed by hints of lavender, mossy tree bark, and fallen leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is expansive and juicy, with loads of savory accents and firm, grainy tannins, finishing long with a minerally lift.

Structured and pretty serious Petit SHL, focusing on blue and black fuits, good structure and tension, showcases the quality of this year's Cabernet Sauvignon, highlighting the nuance and inky character of the grape in 2023, harvest September 8 to October 5.

The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is another stellar wine from the team at Smith Haut Lafitte. It screams with Cabernet Sauvignon character. Inky dark fruit, blackberry, gravel, pencil shavings, crushed rocks, lavender and sage saturate the palate. The tannins will need time to soften. Small berries and thick skins yielded an especially serious Petit Smith Haut Lafitte that is quite impressive.

The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte has a more floral bouquet than the Les Hauts de Smith: violet-tinged black fruit, cedar and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and the 30% new oak is neatly integrated. There's fine grip with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish to lend edge. Recommended.

Dark ruby, deep core, purple reflections. Fresh herbal savouriness, blackberryish confit, a hint of cassis, some orange zest, inviting bouquet. Complex, finely-meshed, fresh acidity, red berryish touch in the finish, mineral aftertaste, good ageing poten- tial.

This has a big structure of polished tannins that are energetic and punchy. Medium to full body with beautiful blackcurrants, as well as dark tobacco and wet earth. Chewy at the end, but a pointed and focused finish. More structured than 2022. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. From organically grown grapes.
