Petit Smith Haut Lafitte rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2021

In 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte, which they acquired with the firm intention of perpetuating its tradition of excellence. “Our philosophy can be summed up in one sentence: to do everything possible to make each vintage of red and white wine worthy of our magnificent terroir.”

The vineyard has the organic certification

Tasting notes

Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte red 2021 is extremely fine with silky tannins and beautiful aromas and flavors of Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium-bodied, with notes of blackcurrant, liquoriceand dark chocolate. A great finesse and a good structure.

Plump, with up-front apricot and peach flavors backed by a zip of grapefruit peel. Delivers good energy and will drink nicely in the near term. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2025. 800 cases made, 150 cases imported.

This has very pretty cabernet aromas of blackcurrants and iodine with cloves, stone and just a hint of fresh herbs. Medium-bodied with a firmness and freshness on the palate, leading to a linear and racy finish with plenty of energy. Crunchy. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. From organically grown grapes.

The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte clearly has greater fruit intensity on the nose, mainly black fruit with touches of loam and white pepper. The oak here is very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and notable salinit

More Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is a 60/40 split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and it's another medium-bodied, pretty, elegant, impressive wine from this team. Cassis, redcurrants, tobacco leaf, and a hint of leather all shine here, and it's focused and nicely structured on the palate, with fine tannins and a great finish. Where the Les Hauts de Smith is up-front and ready to go, this is going to benefit from at least 2-3 years in the cellar.

The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is a seriously impressive wine. A burst of sweet dark fruit, kirsch, lavender, sweet spice and leather makes a strong first impression. Charming and engaging, the 2021 offers tons of Cabernet Sauvignon character and a kiss of new French oak that works so well here. Impeccable.

Medium-bodied with fine, tight tannins and a just-ripe core of black fruit. Some dark clove and black pepper, too. Fresh and focused. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. From organically grown grapes.

The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, and I think a step up over the Les Hauts de Smith. Cassis, graphite, ripe tobacco, and some earthy notes all flow to a medium-bodied, focused, elegant Cabernet that has the purity and fruit to drink nicely right out of the gate yet enough structure to keep for 10-12 years.

Deep ruby in color, the wine has depth and volume, soft, ripe tannins, roundness, length and lift, finishing with soft, fresh, dark currants and leafy tobacco nuances. The wine is made from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon paired with 40% Merlot. Drink from 2024-2037. 90-92

The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is raised in 30% new oak. Fuller on the nose compared to the Les Hauts de Smith, it displays lovely blackberry, seawater and subtle tobacco aromas. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with firm grip, slightly chalky-textured tannins and a minerally finish of moderate length. There is something almost Loire-like about this wine, even though it contains no Cabernet Franc. Very saline.

Cabernet Sauvignon takes the leading role in the 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte. This super-classic Graves is not especially forthcoming today, but that should not be an issue in time. Graphite, dried herbs, spice and menthol open with a bit of coaxing, with pretty floral top notes that appear with some aeration. A long, persistent finish rounds things out in style.

(60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot). Purpurrot, reine, klare Cabernet-Nase, super sexy, sortentypisch, frisch, ausladend.

Dark chocolate, liquorice and slate with pretty notes of rose and violet that softly edge the nose. The raspberry, strawberry and blueberry fruit has a touch of sharpness, though I love the edges of chalk and slate minerality that give it real direction and linearity with little movement up or down as the flavours travel across the palate. All the elements are well delivered, elegant and really in focus. This has excellent attention to detail and lots going on. A characterful pick in 2021.
