Petit Cheval - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval, a second sample inserted into the blind tasting, has a very ripe, slightly candied bouquet that feels a bit monotonous compared to the best wines in this flight. The palate is medium-bodied with lower acidity than I would like. It's missing some backbone and grip toward the finish. It's unclear how this will age, so drink it in the near future. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval offers up aromas of minty cherries, plums, raw cocoa, mint and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and voluptuous palate underpinned by a broad-shouldered chassis of tannin. A blend of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot, it's a rather structured young Petit Cheval that will reward a bit of patience.

Sleek and solid, with a well-defined core of dark currant and black cherry puree lined with black licorice and sweet tobacco. Boasts black tea and warm paving stone accents through the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2033.

I wrote in my note on the 2020 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval that this is "one hell of a second wine," and it has a kiss of the elegance and complexity found in the top cuvée. Black fruits, roasted herbs, graphite, and scorched earth notes all emerge from this ruby/purple-hued beauty, which has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It will drink nicely for 15+ years.

It is easy to think of this as a mini Cheval Blanc due to its gorgeous display of flowers, sweet cherries, spices and tobacco wrappers in the perfume. The wine offers the perfect blend of freshness, silky-refined-textures and purity in the supple fruits on the palate that keep on with you all way through to the finish. There was a time when second wines were simply second wines. That is clearly not the case as this is a solid example of a baby Cheval Blanc. You can enjoy this on release and for the following 2 decades after that. Drink from 2023-2040.

Deep and really intense in the sensory profile showing notes of mixed white flowers, plums, white pepper, sandalwood, incense, chamomile and helichrysum. Full bodied, tasty and solid in the tasting showing tension and volume, very pleasurable right from the start. Better from 2026.

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval is stunning. Rich, deep and expansive, the Petit Cheval is outrageously good. In fact, it could easily be mistaken for a Cheval Blanc from anything less than a great vintage. The aromatics are alluring and the balance is sublime; all that really identifies this as a second wine is a bit of mid-palate depth. Sweet floral and spice accents extend the effortless, gracious finish.

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval was cropped at 35hl/ha and includes no Cabernet Sauvignon, which is in the Grand Vin. It represents only 12% of total production, as 17% is sold in bulk. It has an intense nose with blackberry, black olive compote and subtle estuarine scents. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a slight creaminess developing with aeration. There's modest depth, and a touch of dark chocolate appears towards the finish. This is a delicious Deuxième Vin that will need three to five years to give years to coalesce.

So much complexity and layers, wonderfully fragrant, raspberry, damson fruits with points of orange and mandarin peel that give flecks of minerality and bitterness in the best way. Balanced acidities, and a serious architecture all combine to give a brilliant brillant Petit Cheval that has improved over ageing and is one to look out for. 39ha, director Pierre Lurton, winemaker Pierre Olivier Clouet. 12% of overall production because the dry summer was tough on the young vines on gravel. 3.7ph.

Floral nose with violet, fine spice, pepper, very Cab Franc with layers of ripe dark fruit and cassis. Fine density with a backbone of fine tannin, savoury with some sage and bay leaf, nice bite of freshness despite ripe fruit and a long lingering finish.

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval, which represents 12% of the total production this year, has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, touches of wilted iris and just a dab of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit intermixed with sage and black pepper. Grippy and quite serious toward the finish, which feels a touch drier than usual. I feel this will need 5–7 years for the tannins to soften.

A huge amount of density and grip, the tannins close in from the first moment and it needs some time to get past the intense cocoa bean, liquorice and cassis fruit, but as it opens up you get a generous serving of peony, iris and violet. The focus is very much on what the Cabernet Franc is giving at this point, and this is a serious Petit Cheval. 12% of overall production because the dry summer was tough on the young vines on gravel (with 71% going to the main estate wine and 17% not bottled under the estate name). 3.7pH.
