Peter Michael - Au Paradis - Napa Valley 2022

Peter Michael Winery: The masterpiece of a pioneering family

In 1982, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael acquired 630 acres of volcanic ridges on Mount St. Helena in the Knights Valley. Inspired by the vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux, they created wines rooted in their terroir, designed to stand the test of time. Today, with the support of their son Paul and his wife, Peter Michael Winery remains true to its founding principles: high-altitude vineyards, classic winemaking, and limited production.

Grown in the heart of the Oakville AVA’s famed red dirt in Napa Valley, ‘Au Paradis’ is a wine that transports any wine lover, hence its celestial name, which translates as “In Heaven.” Planted in the foothills on the east side of the valley on a raised, gently sloping plateau, the Bordeaux varietals develop into a classic style with silky tannins and deep red fruit. Between 500 and 600 feet, 26 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot look down on the valley and across to the Mayacamas Mountains.

The 2022 Vintage:

The video of the vintage: https://youtu.be/pPuleDsElpw

Continuing the drought from 2020 and 2021 with another winter of low rainfall in 2022, the drier soils and warmFebruary and March temperatures brought on budbreak early which carried through to early flowering, fruit set and veraison. The weather during bloom was fairly steady and yields were only slightly below average, mainly due to smaller berries and clusters.
Overall, the summer was cooler than 2021 but a prolonged heat event occurred in early September, condensing the harvest window to eight days, finishing on September 17th.

Tasting notes:

The deep ruby 2022 ‘Au Paradis’ exhibits an attractive array of black currant, violets, blackberries and dried red rose petals with black tea and garrigue accents. The silky entry and dense, rich mid-palate are supported by plush, velvety tannins and lead to a long, lingering finish. This is a refined and polished Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville that will age well for years but will be approachable in the next five years.

(Oakville, Napa Valley; Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Cabernet Franc 6.5%, Petit Verdot 8%, Merlot 105%, and 3% Malbec; 14% alcohol; 100% new French oak; tasted in the Bordeaux offices of Opus One). A wine that has been on la place now since 2004. So lifted, light and aerial that it’s almost gravity-defying. Utterly glorious aromatically, with those lavender and rosemary notes and a subtle touch of violet. Walnut. A hint of sloe and damson. Blueberry. Blackberry. There’s grace and power here but all is in balance. Bold and ample in the mouth, but never quite pushing into the cheeks and with almost a slightly greater vertical range, such that it feels almost lozenge shape. The cedar notes in the mid-palate are divine already and the texture is incredible. We finish on dark chocolate coated violet. Et in arcadia ego!

Highly scented and perfumed blue fruit on the nose, smells fresh and fragrant. Tobacco, dried herbs, blackcurrants, plums and black cherries. Super floral but also with some savoury earth tones as well as tobacco and cedar. Fleshy and almost chewy, mouth filling but delicately, the tannins have a soft grip. I like the cooling blue fruit and graphite aspect with liquorice, aniseed and clove. Wide and ample in the mouth but lifted and not heavy, elegant and polished. Complex flavour and really nice layering, there’s no shortage of flavour and there’s gorgeous tannins but the alcohol heat and spice poke through at the end and just create a bit of a narrowing of enjoyment. Aging 18 months, 60% new oak. Harvested over eight days from September 10-17.

Deep ruby red, this is powerful and concentrated, lovely dark spice. Fleshier, with softer tannins than the Pavots, spiced plum, sandalwood and cedar, bitter black chocolate, luscious feel. Kick of heat on the finish. 60% new oak for ageing, 100% destemmed, 610m altitude. Morgan Maureze head winemaker.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis contains 21% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. It has singular, inviting aromas of blueberry, black cherry, juniper, thyme, violet and dark chocolate. The full-bodied palate is just as expressive, offering power and concentration without sacrificing elegance. Its graphite and floral-laced flavors are structured by luxuriously powdery tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, layered finish. A total of 1,642 cases were made, and the wine will be released in September of 2025.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis is dense, powerful and packed to the core. There's notable density and concentration, but it's hard to get past some of the awkward contours and overall astringency. I find the oak signature pretty overpowering as well. Hints of blackberry, chocolate and licorice linger. The 2022 is a question mark for now. Drinking Window 2026-2032.
