Penfolds, St Henri Shiraz - Australie 2022

Penfolds, 180 years of innovative winemaking

Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality.
It is a pioneering spirit which still rings true after nearly two centuries, that has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today. Over its 180-year history, only four winemakers have helmed Penfolds, each serving as a steward of a distinctive philosophy and style—what we might refer to as the ‘House style’.There is a strand of shared DNA throughout Penfolds family of wines, yet each clearly expresses its unique persona.

St Henri, another expression of Shiraz

In the history of Penfolds wines, the name St Henri, with origins dating back to 1890, precedes that of Grange. Officially launched in the early 1950s, the wine gained significant momentum in the 1990s. Originating from five distinct wine regions (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, The Peninsulas), it offers a truly unique interpretation of Shiraz. What sets St Henri apart is its meticulous aging process in large, old wooden vats. This method minimizes the influence of oak on the wine, allowing the fruity character to shine in all its purity. For many years, it shared the same price as Grange; today, it represents excellent value for its proud heritage, the quality of its fruits, and its substantial aging potential.

Tasting note:

The St Henri Shiraz shows a deep plum and violet hue. The nose is pure and expressive, free from new oak influence, revealing notes of raspberry, wild berry gelato, coffee beans, and cinnamon cake, with savory hints of olives, peppers, and brine.
On the palate, it’s elegant yet powerful, with layers of hazelnut, white chocolate, liquorice, and rich berry fruit, reminiscent of Kir Royale and melted chocolate. The tannins are ripe and seamless. A classic St Henri — vibrant now, but built to age beautifully over decades.

This is an utterly mesmerising St. Henri.  It is complete, thrillingly balanced and sumptuously rewarding.  It might be the most immediately enjoyable St. Henri of all time!  Rich, dark, mellow and superbly well-appointed, this is a crowd-pleaser with little visible astringency or muscle.   Instead, this mille-feuille of red, blue, black and purple fruit is sensational, and it will enchant all-comers with its epic allure and precociousness.  While we can dive into this pool now, the engine, which purrs away in the core, will keep this wine ticking over for at least three decades.

The 2022 Shiraz St Henri is quite classic and more brooding than usual. This is an iron fist in a velvet glove, with a compact, youthful core of blackberry and tempered chocolate over a gentle dusting of Middle Eastern spices and coal fire. It is superbly balanced with rivers of fine tannins and the fruit is still very much in its shell. The 2022 is a superstar in the making.

(South Australia; 100% Shiraz; sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale; aged for 12 months in large already used foudres; pH 3.72; 14.5% alcohol). Meaty. A little animal. Plump. Gracious tannins on the attack, more and more present over the palate’s evolution. A lovely limpid core. So accomplished technically and so fresh and bright and lively. A little graphite on the finish.

The 2022 St Henri Shiraz is a magnificent wine, which ages with grace and detail for many, many decades. Looking at this as a young wine, it shows exuberant fruit power, powerful structure and a cacophony of spices. However, with age, these wines become graceful and almost ethereal. In a recent tasting of 40 vintages of St Henri going back to 1958, the wine revealed itself to be one of patience, detail and elegance. The highlights undoubtedly were 1962, 1971, 1986, 1991 and 2010. These were wines for the ages, and this 2022 will be. The fruit is from Barossa Valley (39%), McLaren Vale (31%) and the balance from Padthaway, matured for 14 months in large, seasoned vats. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Slate, crayon, rose bud, raspberry puree, cumin, tapenade, enveloping peony notes as it opens. Intense right now, with a ton of pleasure, but this is a wine that deserves long cellaring, and I suggest giving it several more years in bottle to allow the floral, finessed side to come out, as this is truly a wine that can age. Peter Gago chief winemaker. No new oak for ageing.

A brighter, bigger style of St Henri. Strawberry and cherry on the nose, then a ripe and concentrated palate full of flavour, charm and personality, packed with tons of superb spice which comes from both the fruit and the wood: liquorice, black and Szechuan pepper. Juicy, succulent and totally moreish on the finish. Very full structured, dense and powerful but tightly coiled right now. Built for the long haul, this will age for decades and provide plenty of enjoyment along the way. A blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway, aged 14 months in large, seasoned oak vats. Released at £95.
