Penfolds, St Henri Shiraz - Australie 2021

Penfolds, 180 years of innovative winemaking.

Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. It is a pioneering spirit which still rings true after nearly two centuries, that has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today. Over its 180-year history, only four winemakers have helmed Penfolds, each serving as a steward of a distinctive philosophy and style—what we might refer to as the 'House style'.There is a strand of shared DNA throughout Penfolds family of wines, yet each clearly expresses its unique persona.

St Henri, another expression of Shiraz

In the history of Penfolds wines, the name St Henri, with origins dating back to 1890, precedes that of Grange. Officially launched in the early 1950s, the wine gained significant momentum in the 1990s. Originating from five distinct wine regions (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, The Peninsulas), it offers a truly unique interpretation of Shiraz. What sets St Henri apart is its meticulous aging process in large, old wooden vats. This method minimizes the influence of oak on the wine, allowing the fruity character to shine in all its purity. For many years, it shared the same price as Grange; today, it represents excellent value for its proud heritage, the quality of its fruits, and its substantial aging potential.

The 2021 vintage:

This wine presents a dark, dense appearance with a black core and purple rim. The nose reveals an intricate blend of raspberry liquorice and white chocolate, intertwined with freshly ground nutmeg and toasted fennel, complemented by spiced apple pie aromas. Savory notes of artisanal pastrami and fresh bagels add depth and harmony. On the palate, wild cherry and pomegranate are joined by hints of golden custard tart and toasted sourdough, offering layers of complexity. A distinct ironstone minerality leads to a refined, savory finish, with tightly woven, velvety tannins that will soften gracefully with age, making it a wine worth cellaring.

Fragrant and exuberant, with a core of black cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry puree and blackberry notes that show accents of candy-coated fennel seed, fresh tarragon, cigar box and violet, backed by a hint of savory black olive tapenade and bittersweet chocolate. All of these complexities are set up on a dense, fleshy frame, with gripping tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2038. 358 cases imported.

This 2021 St Henri blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale Shiraz is a charmer but understated. A fresh and bright expression of dark cherry and roasted spice flavors, which are seamless and moreish. A little more reserved than usual, with solid, measured and well integrated tannins before opening out to a savory finish. An elegant vintage that may surprise in time.

While you twiddle your thumbs waiting for 2020 Grange to wake up from its slumber, this is the wine you need in your glass to while away the time!  2021 St Henri is a sensational and marvellously flamboyant creature with concentration, a commanding presence, incredible spice, and traction.  It might be a youthful wine, but it already wants you to get stuck in it.  And it is great fun, too.  So often, the big Penfolds tickets require silence and reverence, and St Henri is often among this cabal.  But in 2021, it bursts from the blocks with all guns blazingand it is utterly delicious.

(100% Shiraz; sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale; aged for 12 months in large already used foudres; pH 3.72; 14.5% alcohol). Ultra-spicy and with a lovely fresh green peppercorn note. Dark berry and stone fruit. Eucalyptus. Menthol. Wild herbs. Hoisin. Liquorice. There’s a lovely tactile sense of tannic grip and then a release of sapid, juicy fruit. Then it grips again as the fine-grained but considerable tannins build once more. Impressively structured. Very long. Made to go the distance.

Blackberries and dark chocolate with some toasted nuts, oak and graphite give this very enticing aromas that follow through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate. Extremely well crafted overall and easy to drink young. Drink or hold.

I recently tasted a vertical of St Henri from 1958 through to this 2021, and just behind the 1962 and 2010, the 2021 was among the top five best St Henri's ever made. The 2021 St Henri Shiraz has succulence and balance, and it is fresh and unencumbered by heavy oak characters via the adherence to large-format, seasoned oak and the blessing of the season. The tannic density and weight of the wine comes from the fruit rather than the vessel, and this will hold it is great stead over the decades to come. This was sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. 2021 was a lovely season in South Australia; the lead-in was wet from August onward, replenishing the arid ground from the past three vintages of drought. The season was long and warm but rarely, if ever, hot, with well-timed rain events that allowed producers, for the most part, to avoid viticultural pressure. Having explained this, I have found many of the reds from 2021 to be really quite ripe—it seems to me that many people had the opportunity to leave fruit on the vine, and many did. This feels to buck that trend. Excellent. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Like a wise old friend, St Henri never seems rushed or unnecessarily exaggerated, with its rounded tones of lush Shiraz fruitiness celebrated but not overly amplified through a 12-month maturation in large old oak vats. Since its first vintage in 1957, this winning formula has resulted in a truly integrated palate, with the softness of the tannins ensuring a calm finish. Fruit from the Barossa and McLaren Vale brings both generosity in the rich cherry and ripe red plum flavours, along with a meaty chew, while also maintaining length and drive through a long, even palate peppered with savoury tones and minerality.

Dark plum colour, intense with a kick of smoky oak. A wine that showcases the concentration and spice to an Australian Shiraz even without any new oak, puts the focus on aromatics, fragrant grilled cumin, rose petal, black olives, baked spice and grilled herbs. Just awesome - but don't approach yet, this honestly could do with six or seven years to even rev up to the starting blocks. Tasted during the September Releases, and also at an incredible vertical held in Paris back in January that more than showed how St Henri can hold its own and improve for decades.
