Penfolds, RWT Bin 798 - Barossa Valley 2022
Penfolds, 180 years of innovative winemaking.
Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. It is a pioneering spirit which still rings true after nearly two centuries, that has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today. Over its 180-year history, only four winemakers have helmed Penfolds, each serving as a steward of a distinctive philosophy and style—what we might refer to as the 'House style'.There is a strand of shared DNA throughout Penfolds family of wines, yet each clearly expresses its unique persona.
RWT, short for "Red Winemaking Trial," began in the early 1990s and was officially launched in 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Unlike the more robust Grange, RWT offers a contemporary, opulent style, crafted from Barossa Valley Shiraz grapes selected for their aromatic complexity, varietal purity, fine tannins, and plush texture. Aged in French oak, it provides a refined contrast to Grange’s bold character. While approachable upon release, RWT Bin 798 has the structure and balance for long-term aging.
The 2022 Vintage:
Tasting notes:
The wine's "Barossa Noir" color hints at its depth. The nose is complex, with French oak adding exotic spice to mulberry and earthy ironstone notes. Rich layers of espresso, bitter chocolate, and rhubarb complement savory elements like pepper-crusted beef and fennel, with a touch of leather. On the palate, white cherry, red and blue fruits, chocolate undertones, and pink peppercorns shine. The wine's structure, with layered tannins and fine acidity, suggests great aging potential, capturing the essence of Barossa Valley.
