Les Pèlerins de Lafon Rochet - Saint-Estèphe 2023

Lafon Rochet, a new era

Lafon Rochet, Grand Cru Classé in 1855, stands out on the road to the Médoc with its well-known golden yellow façade. In September 2021, a new chapter in the history of this Saint-Estèphe estate began. The Lorenzetti family, another committed and dynamic family, bought the estate with the ambition to carry its famous colors high.

In March 2022, Christophe Congé was appointed General Manager of Lafon Rochet. After having spent more than 20 years at Domaines Barons de Rothschild, his main mission will be to go even further in the sense of detail. A new era full of ambition and with great promise is beginning for this grand cru.

Les Pèlerins de Lafon-Rochet, the estate’s second wine, is made from younger vines, and those within plots of land with predominantly clay and gravel soils.

The 2023 Vintage:

Climatic conditions:

With spring weather conditions warmer but just as wet as those experienced in the past, this is very much a vintage that has been a ected by climate change. The challenge was all the greater for the vineyard as it is in its fi nal year of organic conversion. Our technical teams’ reactivity and resilience proved instrumental in curbing disease pressure.

Tasting notes:

Initial tastings reveal fresh, fruit-led Merlots, with superb balance. The Cabernets exhibit power, richness, and an elegant tannic structure.

The 2023 Les Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet has a light, gravelly bouquet with tertiary black fruit, touches of blackcurrant leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins, approachable thanks to the 56% Merlot content, just a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish. Early drinking.

Fresh, spicy tobacco, and currants come through easily in the nose, and on the chewy, peppery, currant-filled palate of this easy-to-like, and easy-to-enjoy, charmer. Drink from 2025-2032. 89-91 Pts.

Spice and intense black fruits, lavendar and blueberry, fresh acidities. This estate continues its careful reworking, focusing first on the vineyard, ensuring full ripeness of the vines to tease out its St Estèphe personality. Ageing in a mix of one year old barrels and 1,300l oak casks. Final year of organic conversion, certification in 2024, 42hl/h yield. Christophe Congé technical director, Jacky Lorenzetti owner.

The 2023 Les Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet is a terrific second wine. It offers lovely forward fruit intermingled with complicating Saint-Estèphe savoriness and earthiness. Dark plum, licorice, lavender, dried herbs and menthol open with air, rounding things out. The tannins are perhaps a bit large in grain, but this is a second wine, after all.

The 2023 Les Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet is very primal on the nose with a mixture of cassis and black plums—a little floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry and fleshy tannins. The 56% Merlot controls the style of this wine; it’s quite approachable on the lightly spiced finish. This is a fine offering. It just needs two to three years in bottle.

The 2023 Les Pelerins de Lafon-Rochet is deep garnet-purple in color. It opens with savory notes of dried Provence herbs, tapenade, and Sichuan pepper leading to a core of redcurrants, fresh raspberries, and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is a touch thin and green, with chewy tannins and a rugged finish. The blend is 56% Merlot and 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, with pH 3.60.
