Péby Faugères - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Silvio Denz Vineyards

The estate of Vignobles Silvio Denz in Saint-Emilion and in Sauternes share the passion that drives their owner. A love for wine and the prestige of great terroirs inspired the businessman to invest in the Bordeaux region. Having led Lalique Group to success, he channelled his enthusiasm and his taste for excellence into the acquisition and development of vineyard estates.

Château Péby-Faugères, the red gem of Silvio Denz

The red jewel in the Vignobles Silvio Denz crown, Péby Faugères was created in 1998 in tribute to the estate’s former owner Pierre-Bernard Guisez, whose nickname it has adopted. Made up of Faugères’ best Merlot plots, this vineyard occupies a single piece of land on the ancient soils of the Saint-Émilion limestone-clay plateau and was soon recognised as a wine in its own right.

In addition to the demanding standards which it shares with other Vignobles Silvio Denz estates, this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé also nurtures rarity: every year, the harvest undergoes a rigorous selection which only permits small-scale production. Besides, since 2020 the estate is officially certified organic

The 2021 vintage

Château Péby Faugères 2021 is a powerful, elegant wine, with a beautiful, deep, dark colour. The nose develops intense notes of dark fruits and truffle.
On the palate, notes of blackcurrant and blackberry mark the prelude to a mineral finish. It is smooth and round in the mouth, with extremely fine tannins and a delicious, velvety finish.

N°77 TOP 100 JS FRANCE
Fine, dusty oak spices with a refined lactic undertone at the moment that reminds me a bit of dulce de leche. Sandalwood, cigar box, cocoa, espresso, cassis, blackberries and dark plums. Polished and refined on the palate with excellent concentration trapped in a sleek, almost full-bodied palate. Tannins are silky, close-knit and filigreed, which makes it taste more feathery and ethereal. Extremely long and linear finish that lingers over a minute. Try from 2026 when the oak gets more integrated.

Offers a mulled vanilla note that hangs over a modest core of dried plum and black cherry fruit, with a tobacco accent lingering on the toasty finish. Drink now through 2025. 1,082 cases made.  –JM

Lots of black-olive and blackberry aromas and flavors. Full and linear with intensity and structure. Racy for the vintage. Energy. Class.

Another undeniable success in the vintage is the 2021 Château Péby Faugères, a richer, medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant Saint-Emilion. Based on 100% Merlot that's still resting in 50% new French oak, it possesses rock-solid mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and a great finish and shows the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage while still bringing impressive depth of fruit as well as length. It's worth noting that this is the first vintage vinified and aged all in their new cellar. Production for the 2021 runs roughly 1,000 cases (70% of the production) and it hit a modest 13% alcohol. It's going to drink nicely for 15-20 years. 92-94+

New barrel aging still dominates. But compared with its previous rich and intensive style, Peby Faugères 2021 is much gentler and softer. It shows outstanding roundness and concentration, with a chewy structure. Judging from its high tannins and powerful structure demonstrated at this stage, it may need some patiences before being drinkable. Look forward to how it will evolve after years' aging. ????????????,???????????????,2021???Peby Faugères?????????????????????????,???????????????????????????????,????????????????????????????

Deeply colored, the wine is concentrated, long, deep, lush, opulent and rich. Yet, it is equally elegant, long and refined, with a sweetness and freshness to the fruits and soft, polish to the tannins in the ostentations finish. This is the first vintage produced in their new, show-piece cellars. The wine is produced from 100% old vine Merlot. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2025-2045. 93-95

The 2021 Péby Faugères has quite an opulent bouquet considering the growing season, for me, without the delineation and finesse of the Faugères. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe black cherry fruit, fine tannins, a little more restraint compared to other vintages of late, fresh on the finish. Moderate length. It maybe just needs more personality.

The 2021 Péby-Faugères is a gorgeous Saint-Émilion. Inky dark red cherry, lavender, chocolate, leather, licorice and incense fill out the layers, all framed by a generous kiss of new French oak. Péby is not materially better or more complex than Faugères, it's just done in a richer, more flamboyant style.

Dommage.

As appears to be case with its sibling, Faugères, the limitations imposed by the vintage seem to have somewhat tamed this estate's tendency to push extraction to the limits. Exhibiting rich aromas of blackberries and plums, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak, the 2021 Péby Faugères is full-bodied, ample and layered, but also impressively seamless and complete despite its aspirational style. It wouldn't surprise me if it were to age better than more heralded surrounding vintages.
