Pavillon rouge - Margaux 2014

Château Margaux, a founding Premier Cru

Château Margaux is more than a major or even essential growth. It is a founding growth, since the imagery around it had such a decisive influence in shaping the very idea of how a Grand Vin should exist over time and space. Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the story of a great second wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux took its name in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid-90s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge.

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. It may not have the same “magic” as its elder brother, but it definitely shares its flavours, its balance and the same subtle senses of power and softness.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge has a more classically styled nose compared to its peers, black fruit mixed with graphite and tobacco, unfolding nicely in the glass and incrementally gaining opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, rounded in the mouth, fleshy and plush, with no hard edges in sight. This is quite a seductive Margaux, but it pulls it off well. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux has a crisp, precise, Pauillac-like bouquet with fine delineation, a touch of graphite infusing the black fruit, austere but rather compelling. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannin. I appreciate the balance and elegance of this Margaux, somewhat saline towards the finish with impressive precision. Very fine, very delicious. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge is made from 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot. It’s a beautiful second wine that shines for its elegance, as well as its sexy, sumptuous texture. Giving up lots of spice, dried flowers, sandalwood, and cassis fruits, it has more than a passing resemblance to its bigger sibling. With medium-bodied richness, sweet tannin, nicely integrated oak, and charming, character filled personality, I’d happily drink bottles any day over the coming two decades.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Bottled in July 2016, it remains quite rich and outgoing on the nose with copious red cherry, blackberry and spice-box aromas. With aeration it reveals a little more sous-bois, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tightly knit opening. Certainly this has lost the corpulence that it showed in barrel, lost that puppy fat. Now the linearity comes through, engendered by the cool nights during the growing season, and still delivers that mineral-rich finish. I still maintain that it will need three years in bottle just to soften the tannins.

Love the fruit and juicy character to this second wine of Margaux. Medium to full body, superfine tannins and a long finish. The freshness and savory finish are a big plus. Drink in 2020.

Gorgeous, with a velvety, caressing feel, as warm plum sauce and blackberry confiture notes glide over a thoroughly embedded graphite edge. Rather lush, but light tobacco, bay and iron hints keep this focused even as the fruit takes center stage. Best from 2019 through 2029. 9,583 cases made.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge is soft, open-knit and quite gracious. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, licorice and dried herbs all grace the palate in this exquisite, delicate wine. The 2014 can be cellared for at least a few years, but it is already quite expressive.

Très fruit, cerise burlat, bouche élégante, vive, droite, bien fruitée, épicée en finale, mûre. Bouche concentrée mais suave, tanins ronds veloutés.

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge is round, sexy and seductive. Sweet red cherry, plum, lavender, herbs and licorice open up in a supple, forward wine that will drink well early. Expressive floral notes add lift and perfume on the silky, polished finish. The 2014 is all about grace, but it also has enough vibrant acidity to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years.

Blending the sophisticated aromatics of floral, dark chocolate and fresh boysenberry, this medium-bodied wine is forward and fresh. It delivers a crisp, vigorous cassis finish and is filled with refined charm. The wine was produced from a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and reached 13.5% alcohol. 91-92 Pts

The Pavillon Rouge de Margaux 2014 is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, which Paul Pontallier remarked is almost the same as the grand vin 20 years ago. The nose needs time to coalesce in the glass – a little disjointed at first, though it “finds its groove” and offers ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruits, perhaps richer than I was anticipating. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, almost corpulent opening: a mixture of red and black fruit and a pinch of white pepper. There is good weight in the mouth, quite linear with a nicely controlled, quite mineral-rich finish. This is a very fine Pavillon Rouge ’14 that will probably need three or four years in bottle.

24% of the crop. 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Mid crimson. Rather a muddy, indistinct nose. But the palate structure is wonderful. And there is no excess of acidity. Racy, sinewy, fresh but not tart. Paul Pontallier feels this Pavillon Rouge is the best since 2009 and 2010, because of selection. Very graceful indeed. Spreads right across the palate with lovely texture. But fairly early maturing. He admits that Pavillon Rouge 2014 is better than some of his vintages of Ch Margaux. Very appetising and really rather beautiful.  13.5%Drink 2020-2030

This is a savory, fresh vintage for Pavillon. A classic Bordeaux according to Paul Pontallier. Silky, firm tannins with good structure and potential to age. 77% Cabernet, 22% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. Merlot was less successful than Cabernet in 2014.

Lovely fragrance and purity of fruit – 'We have gained perfect precision in the last 10 years', said MD Paul Pontallier. It will be expressively elegant as it matures. Drink: 2019-2030 (91)

This is very structured and strong for the second wine of Pavillon Rouge. Full and very chewy. Yet it’s ripe and intense. Makes you think. Very well done.

77 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 22 % Merlot, 1 % Petit Verdot. 17/20 2020 – 2037

92–94. Barrel Sample. Unusually, this is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon, yet it is a highly perfumed wine, with fine grain tannins. Acidity and freshness are all around, and there are touches of forward wood notes.   — R.V. (3/31/2015)

Very silky and refined, with supple plum and cassis notes infused with rooibos tea and bergamot hints. The long,floral-edged finish is very fine-grained, with the floral notes expanding quickly as this airs. Gorgeous in feel, with impressivelength.
