Marquis de Terme - Margaux 2020

Marquis de Terme, a shining grand cru

The origins of this wine date back to the 15th century, but its name will be given in 1762, by François de Peguilhan, Marquis de Terme. The Seneclauze family owns the property since 1935. In 2009, Ludovic David is appointed as General Manager of Château Marquis de Terme. This change is the starting point of a new area for this 40-hectare large estate, located in on Margaux's typical gravelly soils. Numerous innovations and a new dynamism are brought to enhance the exceptional terroir of the Marquis de Terme wines.

The estate combines with excellence the rigour of work and ancestral know-how with creativity, lightness and open-mindedness. The estate's teams have at heart to create exceptional wines and to radiate the Marquis de Terme state of mind!

2021, a seductive vintage

Ludovic David tells you the story of this vintage: https://bit.ly/MarquisdeTerme2021

This 2021 vintage reveals a deep and intense colour. The nose is complex
with blackcurrant and blueberry notes. White pepper, cedar and menthol spicy notes complete the bouquet. The palate is charming and elegant with sweet fresh blackberries and cocoa flavours. A hint of liquorice adds complexity to the finish. The tannins are silky and delicate and the acidity reinforces the natural freshness. This is a charming and perfectly balanced vintage.

The 2020 Marquis de Terme has a much more classical, sophisticated bouquet compared to the Marquis d'Alesme. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and delineated with plush black fruit and a healthy dash of white pepper, cohesive and potent on the finish. There is quite a lot of concentration here, but it manages to deliver requisite finesse and confirms my views just after bottling that this is a great Margaux. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

92–94. Barrel Sample. This wine has a definite firm structure with its initial dry tannins. Slowly the black fruits seep through to promise balance, richness in structure and fruits for the future.

Frankly ripe, this extroverted version brims with warmed boysenberry, açaí and blackberry puree supported by singed sandalwood, black tea and violet notes along the way. Broad, velvety finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2034. 10,000 cases made.

The flagship 2020 Château Marquis De Terme clearly a step up and is based on 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. Aged all in once-used oak for 16 months, it has a pure bouquet of cassis, violets, chocolate, and toasted spices. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the pure, focused, elegant style of the vintage, has ultra-fine tannins, and outstanding length. It's one of the finest wines from this estate I've tasted, and the quality here continues to skyrocket.

Licorice, black cherries, blackberries, cocoa, crushed rocks and violets pop in the nose. On the palate, the wine is silky, plush and creamy, with a wealth of lusciously-textured black and red fruits and a touch of spicy chocolate that holds with you from the mid-palate, all the way through to the finish. Drink from 2025-2050.

Solid and dense in the glass showing notes of black prunes, blackberries, liquorice, incense, sweet caramel, sandalwood, juniper berries and cloves. Full bodied, very soft tannins of optimum workmanship and a solid, engaging finale which demands a return to the glass. Better from 2025.

The 2020 Marquis de Terme is a potent, heady wine. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, incense and sweet oak give this concentrated Margaux tons of flavor intensity. Ultimately, though, the 2020 feels heavy. I expected a little more.

The 2020 Marquis de Terme is one of the best offerings from this Margaux estate in recent years. It has a lively and well-defined bouquet with blackcurrant, wild strawberry and pencil box scents, perhaps a little Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grip and backbone, well balanced and poised, I appreciate the salinity of this Marquis de Terme and the manner in which it discretely persists on the finish. Classy.

This has aromas of graphite, blackcurrants, blackberries, walnuts and mint chocolate. It’s focused and full-bodied with a frame of polished, firm tannins. All wonderfully integrated and persistent. Firm and fine. Try after 2025.

Roses and patchouli aromas on the nose. Svelte and charming on the palate, sumptuous but restrained and delicate. Excellent sculpting and persistence with real floraity and herbal-touched cool blue fruits. It’s not massively weighty, more linear and focused but with style to it. Pretty, seductive and alive, all in the best way with a juicy core. An excellent effort this year and a wine that will be approachable soon but will age too. Sleek, refined, cool and classic.

Pure and stylish, some stony notes, discreet but ripe fruit with raspberry, cassis and a sweet spiciness. The palate is classically dense with a fine tannic backbone, ripe yet fresh with good proportions and a long elegant finish.

The 2020 Marquis de Terme is a bit firm, but it offers good depth in its red cherry/red plum fruit. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 becomes more charming over time. Today, it is a bit brutish. Graphite, scorched earth, dried flowers and incense add aromatic nuance with a bit of time in the glass. Tasted three times.

Lots of meaty red and black fruits, scorched earth, leather, and background oak dominate the nose of the 2020 Château Marquis De Terme. A medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, beautifully pure Margaux, it has impressive tannins and the class to benefit from at least 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for over two decades.

The 2020 Marquis de Terme has a focused, delineated nose, vibrant blackberry and raspberry fruit mingling with tobacco and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, gentle grip and a touch of dark chocolate and mint toward the finish. This deserves 4–5 years in bottle, and it should end up at the top of my banded score. Fine. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Cassis, bilberry, chocolate, mocha and pepper. Good, austere, tight, mint leaf on the close of play. This has depth of expression, the fruit has been carefully extracted to minimise what are still pretty ferocious tannins. A yield of 30hl/ha. Tasted three times and was impressed each time. Important to note that Marquis de Terme is one of the few Left Bank estates that does a final adjustment to the blend before bottling, although typically changes are only made to the second wine so this is likely to be at least extremely close to what will go into the final bottle.

A beautiful display of violets, roses, cherry blossoms, espresso, plums, black cherry and cocoa come to the surface with little effort. Silky, soft and polished, medium/full-bodied, with a finish that delivers layer after layer of chocolate covered dark red, plush fruits. 93-95

The 2020 Marquis de Terme sports a deep garnet-purple color and pronounced notes of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry preserves and kirsch, plus suggestions of bay leaves, forest floor, black truffles and hoisin. The medium-bodied palate is soft and juicy, delivering a good amount of ripe black fruits without heaviness, finishing with a spicy kick. This blend is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is aging for 18 months in French oak barriques, 50% new. The alcohol is 14%.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung.

Blackberry and blackcurrant with some licorice and tar on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with intense yet polished tannins and a long, beautiful finish. The quality of the tannins is an upgrade here.
