Pavillon blanc - Bordeaux 2019

Château Margaux, a founding Premier Cru

Château Margaux is more than a major or even essential growth. It is a founding growth, since the imagery around it had such a decisive influence in shaping the very idea of how a Grand Vin should exist over time and space. Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux.

Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux

Sold in the 19th century under the name « Château Margaux vin de sauvignon », it has existed under the brand name « Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux » since 1920 and its label has not changed since that date.

The eleven-hectare vineyard is located on a very old parcel and planted only with Sauvignon Blanc. Today it benefits from the new wine cellar’s ultra-modern installations designed by Norman Foster.

The finesse, complexity, richness and the length in the mouth of Pavillon Blanc are incomparable for a wine produced only from Sauvignon. The recent vintages have opened up new horizons in quality, ageing capacity and style which has become more mineral and much more complex.

This is very linear and minerally with subtle mango and apple, as well as some pineapple and bitter lemon. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a creamy texture and great tension and energy. Heather and lavender undertones. Steely. Tangy finish. Subtle and fine. This is a joy to taste and drink now, but will age beautifully.

Reflecting the trend toward a more vibrant, earlier-picked style for this cuvée, the 2019 Pavillon Blanc exhibits notes of pear, grapefruit and crisp white peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled palate, concluding with a saline finish. Its low pH of 3.05 reflects a rigorous selection of only the first (and lowest pH) juice at the press.

The 2019 Pavillon Blanc is a very pretty, airy white from château Margaux done in a style that emphasizes energy more than anything else. White pepper, crushed rocks and bright saline accents play off the citrus fruit. The 2019 is quite steely, and yet there are no green or vegetal notes at all.

This was the first time I tasted the 2019 Pavillon Blanc de Château Margaux. Picked September 2–12, it has an attractive nose of red apple, linden, Nashi pear and a hint of gooseberry. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, lovely depth and a slightly viscous texture toward the tangy finish. Philippe Bascaules opined that this is a better Pavillon Blanc than the 2018, though I suggest it is level pegging.

The 2019 Pavillon Blanc is, as always, made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The nose opens with delicate scents of Bosc pears, white peaches and fresh Golden Delicious apples with hints of almonds, lemongrass and chalk dust, plus a waft of jasmine. The light to medium-bodied palate has a crisp backbone supporting the myriad of citrus and stone fruit layers, finishing long and mineral laced. 94+
