Pavie Macquin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Château Pavie Macquin is named after the grandfather of the current owners: Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who Saint-Emilion has to thank for the use of grafted plants designed to save the vineyards devastated by phylloxera.

In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed as manager. Along with Stéphane Derenoncourt, they refine Pavie Macquin’s personality and have developed high-quality viticulture which has elevated the château to the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé wine in 2006, and once again in 2012. Recently, his son Cyrille Thienpont has begun to play an active role in Pavie Macquin's management.

The Pavie Macquin vineyard is characterized by its location on a plateau, next to Mondot hill and on the edge of the Fongaban fault. Thanks to its commanding position, its height ranges from 100 meters above sea level next to the hill, to 75 meters on the edge of the plateau. In one unique holding, it borders Troplong Mondot to the east and Château Pavie to the south, and overlooks Trottevieille to the north.

Le Millésime 2021

The plateau terroirs brought out the best of 2021. The mildness of summer does not take anything away from the complexity of the soils and offers us a lot of delicacy and balance.

The 2021 Pavie Macquin is deep, bold and luscious, but within the smaller-scaled style of the year. It is an intensely aromatic, savory Grand Vin that emphasizes finesse more than sheer power. I admire its understated elegance more than anything else. Bright acids drive through a core of black cherry fruit, mocha, spice, new leather and licorice. This beautifully balanced, harmonious Saint-Émilion captures the essence of the vintage in style. Tasted two times.

The 2021 Pavie Macquin offers up aromas of cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingled with mint, spices and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of fruit framed by chalky tannins that assert themselves on the comparatively structured, mineral finish, it's a strong effort.

A very juicy and rounded young 2021 with berry, chocolate, cedar, balsamic, and redwood aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Velvety tannins. Excellent finish. Extremely well done for the vintage. 79% merlot, 19% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2028.

Though leaning to the light, trim aspect of the vintage, this reveals juicy energy behind the red currant and damson plum fruit notes, while red tea, sanguine and singed cedar accents score the finish. Nicely done. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036. 4,600 cases made.  –JM

Concentrated ruby red in colour, this is intense and flavoursome, far more than most in the vintage, with a ton of black cherry and raspberry fruits, and a seriously juicy signoff. Good quality, with finesse and poise, and one to look out for. This is the limestone plateau speaking, I wrote in my En Primeur tasting note, and it is speaking even louder now. 37hl/h yield, harvest October 4 to 19, 50% new oak.

There is a jammy feel about the fruit here, and it seems forced from a sweetness point of view but also over-extracted and sour. This doesn’t sit particularly well with the oak and the acidity, and the whole balance is out of whack. I know that the grapes were flavour-packed because the evidence is here, but the winemaking has created a disjointed wine with lots of impact but little harmony. 16?

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2021 Château Pavie Macquin is a more forward, textured, charming wine from this estate that still has plenty of classic Pavie Macquin class, freshness, and minerality, which is the hallmark of this terroir. Coming from a cooler site just above Château Pavie, the 2021 is a blend of 79% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, from a selection of 80% of the production. Harvest here started on the 4th of October for the Merlot and finished on the 19th of October for the Cabernet, and the wine spent 30-35 days on skins in a mix of open top wood and concrete tanks and is currently resting in 50% new French oak barrels. Its deep purple hue is followed by terrific aromatics of blue fruits, violets, and chalky minerality, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, rounded tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This cuvée always needs bottle age, but I suspect this will be one of the more approachable vintages for this wine.

Deep crimson. Intense dark plum, dark cherry, praline aromas. Generous and refined dark plum, dark cherry dark chocolate flavours, plentiful fine al dente textures, attractive mid-palate density and vanilla/ nougat oak complexity. Finishes graphite/ sinewy firm with very good mineral length. 79% merlot, 19% cabernet franc, 2% cabernet sauvignon. 18 months in new and seasoned oak. 13.5% alc

Pavie Macquin shows us how clay-limestone plateaus cope with the challenges in a moderate vintage. The high-percentage Merlot surprisingly creates a mellow and round mouthfeel and enlightens the palates with a delicate chalky texture on the mid-palate. Bravo! Pavie Macquin 2021 presents even more charming aromas; apart from the flavors of sweet and sour wild jujube and cherry, it also sends forth scents of delicate cumin and fennel. Throughout the tasting, you will hardly notice it's a blend of 70% new oak. From my point of view, this wine is like a hand-made haute-couture suit without any fault. It will be more extraordinary after bottle aging and worth collecting for those who love the limestone terroir. Flowers, plums, espresso, licorice, and dark cherries with a touch of leafy herbs are in the nose. The wine is fresh, bright, crisp, and with a salty, savory, olive-tinted edge on the palate, as well as in the mineral driven finish. Give the wine a few years in the cellar to soften and fill out. The wine was produced from blending 79% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place October 4 - October 19. Drink from 2026-2043. 92-94

The 2021 Pavie Macquin was picked from 4 to 19 October at 37hL/ha, the Grand Vin representing around 80% of the crop. Matured in 50% new oak, it clearly has the most fruit concentration amongst Nicolas Thienpont's portfolio with black cherries, blueberry and bilberry fruit, just a faint touch of orange rind in the background. The palate is fresh and well-structured on the entry, insistent grip and a pleasant seam of sapidity running through this Saint-Émilion. More "vertical" than usual, this is nicely focused with a delineated, quite mineral-driven finish that showcases its asteriated limestone terroir. Excellent.

The 2021 Pavie Macquin is a rich, heady wine, as it typically is. Dark red fruit, leather, smoke, licorice, mocha and espresso build nicely in the glass. The tannins are a bit firmer than they usually are, but there's plenty of creaminess and texture lurking beneath. The 2021 needs time to fully come together. In some tastings it was a bit austere, while in other moments, the trademark Pavie-Macquin sensuality was more in evidence. Tasted three times.

Another success in this challenging year is the 2021 Pavie Macquin, a promising effort that offers up aromas of sweet berries, Indian spices, licorice and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, it's a tensile, tightly wound wine that's concentrated and penetrating, concluding with a mineral finish. Its low pH profile means that this is always an estate that gains a lot from élevage, but even at this early stage, it's clear that this has excellent potential.

Bramble, coffee and caramel notes on the nose. Juicy and vibrant on the palate, this has a gentle coursing of strawberry and blackcurrant fruit with blackcurrant leaf giving a savoury, almost herbal edge, while the crushed stone and slate bring in minerality and salinity on the finish. Detailed and nuanced - I like the overall texture, there is grip and aromatic interest with density, chew and a gorgeous core of acidity that keeps things playful and joyous. Supremely alive and thriving on the palate with a persistence that doesn't let up. I love this and think it will be excellent after ageing. Tasted twice.
