Pastourelle de Clerc Milon - Pauillac 2019

Pastourelle de Clerc Milon, a second wine that takes the lead.

The name Pastourelle refers to a traditional dance between a knight and a shepherdess, beautifully evoked on the label by dancers inspired by the Commedia dell’Arte. This delicate miniature, crafted in gold, enamel, and pearls, once belonged to Catherine II of Russia and symbolises Baroness Philippine de Rothschild’s deep love of theatre.

A Grand Cru Classé, Château Clerc Milon extends over 41 hectares in the northeast of Pauillac, on the Mousset hillside, where an ideal microclimate fosters exceptional viticulture. Its sandy gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil provide the perfect foundation for wines of both elegance and depth.

Made from the same vines and with the same meticulous care as the Grand Vin, Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is hand-harvested in small crates, vinified in the Château Clerc Milon winery, and aged in barrels using time-honoured techniques. Since its creation in 2009, this distinguished second wine has earned its place among Pauillac’s finest, mirroring the refinement and richness of its elder sibling.

The 2019 vintage :

The year 2019 began with a warm and dry winter, marked by a record 24.7°C on February 27, advancing the vine cycle. A cool spring slowed this progression, bringing flowering back to its usual dates. June was contrasting with freshness, rain, and warmth, while July and August were sunny and hot, with beneficial rainfall preventing dehydration.
The harvest, from September 19 to October 9, took place under good conditions, ensuring impeccable grape quality.

It has a garnet color with violet reflections and a charming, generous nose with notes of red fruits, almond paste, and vanilla. The attack is smooth and aromatic, with crunchy and structured tannins. The long and elegant finish is subtly tinged with dark chocolate.

Berry, currant and hazelnut aromas follow through to a medium body with round, layered tannins, a medium, velvety texture and a flavorful finish. Fresh at the end. Juicy and yummy now. Drink or hold.

The second wine of Château Clerc Milon, the 2019 Pastourelle De Clerc Milon is a more Merlot-dominated blend of 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Carmenère. Lots of up-front black cherry, tobacco, cedarwood, and bouquet garni notes emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, has a wonderful sense of elegance and purity, soft tannins, and a great finish. Drink this up-front, pleasure-bent beauty over the coming 10-15 years.

Supple and perfumed, the 2019 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon bursts with aromas of violets, rose petals and sweet berry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, ample and charming, it's a supple, giving wine that will drink well on release.

The 2019 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon, usually an open and effusive wine, is a bit strict in this tasting. That will likely not be an issue in another few years time, when it is ultimately released. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint, spice and rose petal gradually emerge with a bit of time in the glass. There is plenty of depth, but the 2019 is surprisingly reticent.

The 2019 Pastorelle de Clerc Milon has pretty nose of cranberry and rose petal scents, similar to the sample that I received last year. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fleshy ripe tannins, a sweet core of fruit and a touch of vanilla on the finish. Give this 12–18 months in bottle before broaching. [This will be a late release.]

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon leaps from the glass with exuberant notes of Morello cherries, warm cassis and raspberry pie plus underlying suggestions of wild sage, pencil shavings and menthol with a waft of espresso. The medium-bodied palate has loads of zip and zing, with refreshing red and black berry layers and a soft texture, finishing with a peppery kick.

The 2019 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is a gorgeous Pauillac with tons of near and medium-term appeal. Juicy dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, spice and menthol flesh out in this succulent, deliciously forward Merlot-based Pauillac. As always, Pastourelle is not sold en primeur, but only in bottle and a few years after the harvest, when the château deems it ready to drink.

The second wine of Clerc Milon, the 2019 Pastourelle De Clerc Milon has a large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This beauty sports a healthy purple hue as well as classy notes of cassis, ripe cherries, toasted spice, flowery incense, and cedarwood. With medium-bodied richness, considerable elegance, and terrific balance, it's another rocking second wine I'd be happy to drink.

The 2019 Pastorelle de Clerc Milon has a lovely bouquet of cranberry, raspberry and rose petals scents and a touch of potpourri in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berry fruit laced with soy, moderate depth, an easygoing Pauillac that will be approachable, yet embraces Pauillac's classicism and DNA.

The blend of 66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc provide all the elements needed to produce a forward, elegantly-styled, soft, medium-bodied wine with vibrant red fruits, a hint of cocoa and silky textures. This will be ready to go on release and should be perfect for restaurants. 90-92 Pts

A tight, focused red with chocolate, currant and plum character. It's full-bodied, soft and firm with ripe fruit. Shows freshness and brightness. Mostly merlot.

This is gorgeous, rich and round with appealing notes of mocha and chocolate, along with cassis and crushed stone, helping to emphasise the excellent freshness that lies under the fruit. Not sold En Primeur, and sold largely as a restaurant wine, meaning it's tough for the strategy right now. But this is an excellent bottle, that will give plenty of medium-term drinking pleasure.
