Pagodes de Cos - Saint-Estèphe 2021

Cos d'Estournel, a palace entirely dedicated to wine

North of the Medoc, at the bend of the road are the majestic pagodas of Cos d’Estournel. The residence of the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe does not fail to surprise. Here is a real palace, entirely dedicated to wine. This had been desired by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, the founder. Therefore when he inherited a few hectares of vineyards in 1791, he had never ceased to enlarge the estate and to provide it with the best techniques, convinced of having in his hands an exceptional terroir. Property since 2000 of Michel Reybier, Cos d’Estournel pursues its destiny, between audacity and humility. Every decision is a risktaken, in a visionary philosophy that its founder would not have disowned.

Les Pagodes de Cos, an introduction to the style of Cos d'Estournel

Since its creation in 1994, Pagodes de Cos is made from grapes grown in a dedicated terroir whose vines are 35 years old on average.  Seductive, balanced and voluptuous wine, each vintage is an excellent introduction to the style of Cos d'Estournel.

2021, humility and precision

"Unfailing in their choices and meticulous in their approach to the specificities of each plot, our teams met the contrasted weather events of the 2021 vintage with ceaseless vigilance and precision that allowed us to maintain our vineyard in perfect health and bring our precious grapes to ideal levels of maturity.Michel Reybier

Pagodes de Cos 2021 - Graceful

True to the spirit of Pagodes de Cos, the 2021 vintage is succulent, serious, and sophisticated, a wine that is delightful from a young age.
Pronounced notes of blueberry, redcurrant, and strawberry are complemented by smoky, chocolate aromas and a touch of cinnamon that lend a certain complexity, making for a round, elegant, immensely enjoyable wine.

Including lots of Merlot, the 2021 Pagodes De Cos is 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Verdot brought up in 25% new barrels. It's another deeply hued effort with ripe red and black fruits as well as floral, violets, and graphite notes. Medium-bodied, elegant, and nicely balanced, it's a rather firm, focused Pagodes that will round into form with a few years of bottle age.

The 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos is a strong effort, offering up aromas of cassis, charcoal, dark berries and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy palate that's quite rich and extracted, concluding with a saline finish. It's a blend of 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

I like the currant, spice, white pepper and cedar aromas here that follow through to a medium body and pretty core of fruit with currants, tobacco, chocolate and cedar. 60% merlot, 36% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Needs two or three years to soften.

Sleek and fresh, with a core of damson plum and red cherry notes that easily absorb the vintage's austere edge, letting savory and iris accents dart through prettily on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 12,000 cases made.  –JM

Pagodes is as classy as the Grand Vin, and while it is a more forward wine, it is controlled, luxurious and already impressively lip-smacking. Not too tannic or too acid-pinched, this is a sophisticated style packed with black fruit and unmistakable Cos DNA. 17

Blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors with black licorice and asphalt. Medium-bodied with round, lightly chewy tannins and a juicy finish. A little fluid in the mid-palate. Bright and focused at the end. 60% merlot, 36% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

Deep crimson. Dark plum blackcurrant wax polish praline aromas. Generous dark berry/ sweet fruit flavours, fine chocolaty/ velvety textures, attractive mid-palate volume and integrated savoury/ vanilla notes before a bittersweet finish with an inky plume. Superb tannin quality and should last the distance. 25% new French oak barriques. 12.49% alc

The 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos, matured in 25% new oak, offers high-toned black fruit and touches of violet on the nose, which is perhaps just missing some amplitude at the moment. The solid palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, a touch of graphite and white pepper, firm grip and a little spice on the finish. A structured Pagodes, just rather forceful at the moment. It should gain more grace during élevage.

The 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos is a gorgeous second wine. Blackberry, gravel, spice, menthol and licorice all run through the 2021, a wine that is marked by notable freshness and bright acids. Beams of supporting tannin give the wine its energy. There is plenty of Merlot-driven richness, but I suspect the 2021 will need a few years to come together. It is far from an easygoing second wine, that much is pretty clear.

60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Dichtes Rubinrot.

Impressively rich and concentrated for a second wine in this vintage, the 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos delivers notes of raspberries, spiced plums and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and salted palate framed by ripe tannins and lively acids.

Fragrant with soft spicing, vanilla, cedar, cinnamon, dark chocolate with bramble tones and blackcurrant leaf. Fruit feels well worked, I love the texture here - still quite straight and linear, all in one line, but with cool fruit nuances, svelte and sleek tannins and a lovely freshness. Also these spicy Cabernet markers too which are so appealing. Direct with chalky elements that are given lift by the quite present acidity, adding a vivacity to the overall flavour. Good complexity and broad structure. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
