Lilian Ladouys - Saint-Estèphe 2021

Château Lilian Ladouys & the Lorenzetti family, love at first sight

Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti bought the estate after falling instantly in love with it. They brought passion and ambition to this new project. In 2018, the arrival of Manon Lorenzetti brought new energy to their project and was the beginning of the handover. As the representative of a new generation of estate owners, Manon wants to speed up the push towards best practice in the vineyard that her parents, alongside Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen and his teams, initiated in 2009.

In 2020, after the Lorenzettis had restructured their premium Saint-Estèphe vineyards and chosen to tailor their viticultural practices to respect the environment, Château Lilian Ladouys was anointed a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Then, in 2021, the vineyard officially starts its conversion to organic farming

2021, a vintage of many challenges!

First threatened by the cold snap in April causing a certain heterogeneity in the vineyard, then a rainy and humid month of June which favored attacks of mildew; the year 2021 was eventful indeed.
Due to official conversion to organic farming, the expertise of the team, the knowledge of terroirs, and the resilience of the vineyard were essential to resist to these exceptional challenges. Fortunately, the dry end of summer allow the vines to relaunch their maturation process and finally reach full maturity at the end of September.

This harvest is marked by a rather remarkable alcohol-acidity balance, differing from previous years. After 3 prominently more sunny vintages, we find a more classic Bordeaux balance with this 2021 vintage. Elegant and sophisticated, it is emblematic of the complexity of Lilian Ladouys terroirs.

Tasting notes

A terroir vintage of remarkable brilliance!

With a proportion of Merlot identical to the 2009 and 2010 vintages, Château Lilian Ladouys 2021 is characterized by elegant notes of fresh fruit, a rich, charming and captivating nose revealing spice-filled aromas of incense and bitter cocoa. The ample and velvety mouth presents a wellbound, fine and structured frame, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2021 Lilian Ladouys turned out well. Medium in body, with pretty, forward fruit, the 2021 is very nicely balanced. Succulent dark plum, spice, new leather, menthol and dried herbs build into the silky finish.

A perennial overachiever, the 2021 Château Lilian Ladouys is no exception and certainly does well in the vintage. Based on 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, it has a perfumed bouquet of cassis and black raspberry fruit as well as some background spicy oak. Medium-bodied and balance, with fine tannins, it should easily be an outstanding wine as well as a good value.

Les beaux échantillons se révèlent plus harmonieux que dans les années précédentes. Il a le tannin frais du millésime. Au même niveau que les plus beaux voisins, avec un développement en bouteille rapide.

Compared to the previous vintages, the fragrance of Lilian Ladouys 2021 is relatively reserved. The famaliar flowing flowers becomes more delicate and mild in this vintage. The extraction of tannins is very intricate, giving you the sensation of dandelions dancing on your palate. The slender lines of the body present an elegant image, gently caressing your tongue with a tint of warmth. I look forward to its performance after aging. ??????????,Lilian Ladouys 2021???????????“????”???????“?????”??????????,??????????????????????,???????????????????????

The 2021 Lilian Ladouys was picked from 28 September to 8 October and matured in 30% new oak. It has the smallest proportion of Merlot for several years. It has a generous bouquet with blue fruit and violet complementing the red fruit, just a touch of pencil lead in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, good backbone here, though quite strict and just needs a little more amplitude on the dark chocolate-tinged finish. Drink over the next 15-20 years.
